scanner reinstall problems

This is a W98SE problem. I was in safe mode, did a reinstall to get out, and now many programs and hardware are not working. I am just working on them one by one.
The HP scanjet 2300c would not open, so I removed the software and am now trying to reinstall it. Soon as the installation screen opens and I hit' next' after selecting 'typical install' I get ERROR: "the system cannot find the file specified "
There are a few registry entries left behind. Can I safely
just right click and delete them and see if that helps ?

Cheers !

Yeah, you can...just be sure to backup the registry first, just in case.

Personally, I would back up anything important and do a clean install.

Hi again - I just left a note in the reinstall (tips & tricks forum), but I'll sort of repeat myself a bit here [save anyone else from having to dart back & forth]

See if the procedure that Hal has for the Windows.000 folder can help, and then do your Hp uninstall/reinstall after that. Hal's tip is at http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=38140

I wouldn't clean the Registry until after that, either: though the Registry isn't that hard to repair = so no panic if you've already taken the broom to it.

. . . (there's always our good friend RegClean waiting in the wings! . . . )

[p.s.: Roger - your Intel/Amd logo looks more colorful today - did you update it? (or maybe my eyes aren't as tired!)]

Thanks ! There is no Windows.000. I showed it to the tech and I guess he just deleted it. However, there is an empty WUTemp folder, and also, under ' user data', there is a VCM folder with only one file- Extrac32, but also a VCM.000 that has many files mostly .dll and some .sys and .vxd .
Do you think I could move the VCM.000 files into the VCM folder and delete the VCM.000 folder ....
I don't think I can do Hals fix as I dont have a Windows.000
folder.
Redo, Ive done two reinstalls and am saving the 3rd as a very last resort.
Cheers

PS I now think that what caused this mess was that I reinstalled with a CD with a different product key than what was on the PC. That would do it wouldn't it ?

Just for the search records, the solution for this specific HP scanner error msg: " system cannot find the file specified " is to install ' Windows Installer' Ver2, from Microsoft site.
Cheers.

[. . . been busy with family and feasting ....a late Happy Thanksgiving to you!]

Thanks for letting us know. Seems like some of the recent installation routines I've seen from few products leave less to chance, and provide a recent "Windows Installer" option if it doesn't detect one recent enough. Probably the next generation of printers might have it there on the install cd.

As far as moving the VCM.000 files, if everthing is working OK as is, leave them there. If a program complains it can't find a file that happens to be in the VCM.000 folder instead of in VCM, then you could try moving them over. It all depends on whether anything is pointing over there.

My own tendency would be to try moving them (make a few backups first). I don't like to have variations of folders with system files lying around. It might complicate a future install, and then file version conflict might get to be a problem (one older program using a version from VCM, a newer program using a version from VCM.000...)

The product key shouldn't matter to the files, as long as the versions were the same. You can always re-enter your registered product key in the Registry in HKEY_Local_Computer/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version ... and for "ProductID" select the Modify option from the toolbar, and type in your registered ID. Voila.

....shopping time! -- gotta go pickup a cd-burner for the 5year old! She gets her p233mmx upgraded this Christmas ... man, I still like that old P233: it still runs as well as the first day we built it...but it doesn't run Secret Agent Barbie very well

Thanks to all, especially you Gary. Everything is back up again and running fine now after almost 2 weeks of work. Bought that Norton AV 2004 that you alerted me was on sale. All is well ! Good luck in the stores- can you believe the crowds ?
Cheers,
Chris.
