Problem booting comp

After attempting to run Windows Update and restarting, the computer doesn't detect any of my IDE drives. I recieve a msg after saying DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK THEN PRESS ENTER.. I selected the first boot device to the cd in BIOS and tried to run the system disk but I recieve the same msg. Do I have a virus or is my hd busted? Any help would be appreciated.
