Win98SE Updates - Downloading Install Files - Can't Seem To Get *Just One*!
Hi All,
I have been struggling with this for a while now, and it has become something of an obsession with me (probably beyond reason), so I am looking for help to pull me back to sanity! I always install the Win98SE updates that MS release, with the exception of the individual language packs. When I re-built my PC, I decided that downloading each one was too much of a pain, plus I decided to be much more careful about what I installed. Therefore, every applicaiton, utility, and update I install is recorded and I always keep the install files - including all of the Win98SE updates. This has worked fine, and I now have (as of today) 39 updates (says a lot about someone or something but that's another thread). I have listed them at the bottom of this post for posterity. Take note of (my reference) number 7.07 - Language Auto-Selection. That is the one and only update that I have *not* been able to download to my HDD. Every other update I have, with some difficulty sometimes, managed to find the install exe file that is required... but not for that one. To know that I 'require' (no discussion on that point please) that update, I go to the Win98SE update page: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp After running the 'checker' I find that I have 35 un-installed updates from the 'Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition Updates' section. Of these, 34 are the individual language updates that I don't want or need, and the other is that pesky 'Language Auto-Selection'. Please - no comments about it being useless without (some of) the other language packs - I don't care! I just want to know how to do this little thing! From there, if I click on the 'more info' link for that update, I get to this page which explains about the update: http://download.windowsupdate.com/ms...tf/en/5563.htm Most updates also give a further link at that point to where the actual exe file can be downloaded, but not for this one. However, it is not unique in that respect. So for other similar situations, I went to either the home or corporate Windows Update - Download Centre: http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/d.../corporate.asp This usually allows you to find what you want. However, in this case, I cannot find the one I want anywhere. Please, please, please help me! I want to be released from this pathetic obsession - help me out! Yours in frustration, David. ************************************************ List of all updates for Win98SE as at 29 Nov 2003: (Note that the reference at the start of each line is mine) 2.01 - April 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (813489) 2.02 - Certificate Validation Flaw Could Enable Identity Spoofing (Q329115) 2.03 - Cumulative Patch for Outlook Express (330994) 2.04 - Flaw in Microsoft VM Could Enable System Compromise (816093) 2.05 - Flaw in Windows Script Engine Could Allow Code Execution (814078) 2.06 - Buffer Overrun in Microsoft Data Access Components Could Lead to Code Execution (Q329414) 2.07 - Windows Share Level Password Update 2.08 - Flaw in Certificate Enrollment Control Could Allow Deletion of Digital Certificates (Q323172) 2.09 - Unchecked Buffer in Windows Help Facility Could Enable Code Execution (Q323255) 2.10 - Patch Available for IP Fragment Reassembly Vulnerability 2.11 - Patch Available for File Access URL Vulnerability 2.12 - Unchecked Buffer in Windows Shell Could Lead to Code Execution 2.13 - XMLHTTP Control Can Allow Access to Local Files 2.14 - Patch Available for DOS Device in Path Name Vulnerability 2.15 - Windows Security Update 1, November 29, 1999 [Windows 98; security; Spoofed Route Pointer] 2.16 - HTML Help Update to Limit Functionality When It Is Invoked with the window.showHelp( ) Method (811630) 3.01 - Logitech Image Driver Released on September 24 2001 4.01 - DirectX 9.0a End-User Runtime 4.02 - Microsoft _NET Framework version 1_1 4.03 - Windows Critical Update Notification 4_0 4.04 - Internet Explorer Navigation Sound Update 4.05 - Euro Conversion Tool 4.06 - Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package 4.07 - Root Certificates Update 4.08 - Mapped Drives Shutdown Update 4.09 - Windows Media Player 9 5.01 - Agent 2_0 7.01 - Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (818529) 7.02 - Flaw In Windows Media Player May Allow Media Library Access (819639) 7.03 - Buffer Overrun In HTML Converter Could Allow Code Execution (823559) 7.04 - DirectX 9.0b 7.05 - Root Certificates Update 7.06 - Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1, August 2003 (822925) 7.07 - Language Auto-Selection 7.08 - Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (828750) 7.09 - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (824145) 8.01 - Settings 8.02 - System File Versions 8.03 - Outlook Express Configuration |

Hi David
Finally had a free minute to reply! (...going from busy, busy to hectic to frantic) Usually, Language Auto-Selection has to be part of an IE download. It's listed in the "Typical" download list for IE. I imagine you can also do a "Custom" install, and just choose the "Language Auto-Selection" to add that feature. Seems like this should work for Win9x. For Win2k/XP, I'm not sure the same custom options are available. See how it turns out . . . Gary [p.s. here's an article with the feature's list http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=264149 ] |

Hi Gary,
Thanks for joining me on this - I don't feel so lonely now! I hear what you are saying. My thinking though is along these lines: If I accepted the Windows Update, presumably an exe file would be downloaded to my PC and run to install the 'update'. Therefore I should be able to download that file and run it myself. Am I missing something on this one? I freely admit to oversimplification on occasion! Thanks again, David. |

Seems that if Windows Update doesn't offer it (you'd have to look under the Win98 files - it's not a Critical Update, so it wouldn't be in that first section), perhaps you already have it installed unawares. I don't have a Win98 system handy at the moment, but check around in the Control Panel, under something like Regional Settings. If you have the ability to choose between several languages, it's already installed!
If so, life is good. ![]() . . . Gary [if not, a custom install of IE will let you select it] |

Hi Gary,

I am still figuring though that I should be able to download just the exe file that *would* be run if I accepted the update and let it run from the website. If you run that update, it seems to download something quite small (difficult to say exactly how big, but definately not a full install file for IE), and then run it. Feel free to tell me to forget it and 'gedda life' if you feel I am being silly about this, but it is *really* bugging me! David. |

Hi again
Sorry for the long delay - the holiday chores are going strong, as always - (can't wait to get to the celebration) Some of the IE related applets (which the Language feature might be described as) are mostly available through the "Active Update" feature in Windows Update. It's generally not an .exe that you can download and execute later (or save as you've done for the others). Active Update only downloads a small installer, which scans your IE to see what is already installed, and then only downloads a subset of the full download (since most folks have some components already, or choose not to download some features). So pretty much, unless you are Really Good at scouring the MS site for full downloads [every now & then I see a post from a forum member who was able to find a full download for something I didn't think was available], or want to pay MS for a technical support phone call, you're stuck with the Windows Update way of doing things. I have the Language feature installed on all my machines, I find it handy for many of my English-as-a-2nd-language friends. [I used to teach ESL years ago]. . . I generally grab it from an IE download. I hope that sort of answers the question. It's possible that somewhere in the maze that is the MS Internet presence there's a corner with that download available as an .exe - I just wasn't able to find it when I looked. Happy Holidays! ['Tis the Season ]. . . Gary |

Go to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp
Step through the pages, indicating what sort of updates you want and then which operating systyem you want them for. The updates listed can then be downloaded to the folder of your choice. |

[. . . but if the update isn't listed separately, and is a component of IE, all that will be saved is the installer, which when run connects for a custom download/install session. Selecting a folder to save to works for everything else . . . ]

Hi Miz,

Odd isn't it? Thanks anyway, but it seems that Gary is probably correct to say that it is just part of IE itself and cannot be downloaded on its own, even as just a pre-loader (or something). David. |

Hi again David -
I was just working on an older system earlier today, and lo and behold there was a Language-related feature that installed as part of Windows 98 2nd Ed. setup [I'm thinking that this is similiar to the one in IE]. So, just for a lark, try that Setup tab in your Add/Remove Programs applet & see if it's listed in there. I imagine the one you download might be a bit more recent, but hey, no downloading necessary when it comes from the .cabs! . . . Gary |
