XP upgrade copy
If I have an OEM copy of Win98, can I use an upgrade copy of XP for a fresh install? Or will I have to load 98 first?

Yep, it will work just fine for a fresh install... no need to install 98 first.

Really? I heard that the XP upgrade only works for retail versions of Windows, not oem versions. I asked a similar question under another thread ( PC-Media Tech Forums » Software » Windows ME/9x and DOS). Basically, I need to install a new harddrive. If what you're saying is true TwoRails, I can just install my legit oem Win98, then buy the XP upgrade and install it over the 98 version and save myself about $200. Right?

You do not need to install 98 first, unless you want to dual boot. XP needs to know that you have a copy of a previous OS. Boot from the XP disk. It will tell you what to do.

But if I'm installing a virgin harddrive, it will be totally blank, so the upgrade won't detect any kind of OS, right?

Right, but like any other update, it will ask you for the prior version OS CD as not important mentions.

yes it will during the xp install it will ask you for a qualifying product at that time you remove the xp CD and insert the 98 CD and xp set up will scan for and detect the 98 CD and then continue to the next screen then you remove the CD and reinsert the xp CD and carry on with setup

Ok, great. Now I'm getting somewhere. Just a couple more questions.. First thing I need to do is to format my harddrive (I'm just going to format it, instead of buying a new one for now). Since I don't have a CD for the XP pirate OS, I'll need system disks in order to format, right? I should be able to download the system disks from the Microsoft site using any computer. Then its just a matter of setting my BIOS to boot from floppy and format as normal. Am I missing anything?
Once the format is done, I just go out and buy a retail XP upgrade and follow the instructions set out by Andyms18a. I copied this from the MS site: "The Windows XP startup disk allows computers without a bootable CD-ROM to perform a new installation of the operating system. The Windows XP startup disk will automatically load the correct drivers to gain access to the CD-ROM drive and start a new installation of Setup. You cannot upgrade from a Windows XP startup disk." What does that last line mean?! You cannot upgrade from a Windows SP startup disk." But I need the start up disk to format my drive! ???? |

Ok, just as long as I'm able to completely get rid of any evidence of a pirated OS. (Note to self: next time spend the extra money and buy a computer from a legitimate place of business!)

Hi TwoRails,
Yes my question is answered. I was unsure if an OEM copy would qualify for the upgrade. I ran into problems once trying to upgrade 98 to 98se on a friends system, however it was a Compaq. Marty |
