Question What would you do?

Howdy

I just started attending DeVry at the beginning of this month. As a result of being a new student, we were given a software bundle. We got about 13 cds, including a WinXP Pro upgrade. I have a Compaq Presario with Win98 SE. I have plans of building a PC in the near future. My question to you is...would you install the upgrade on the desktop, or would you wait till you built one and use it on that one? If you chose the latter, wouldn't I need to install an OS so XP could load? Or if you chose the first option, would the upgrade then be burnt and not loadable on the new machine? Sorry if I confused ya, I would like to have XP on both machines to take care some of my networking problems. Anyway, I'd appreciate your guidance
Thanks!!

Well... it would depend on what CPU and how much RAM is in that system before I would install XP. I would do a clean load, but no, you don't need an OS loaded to install the upgrade. You start the install, it will at some point ask you for the CD of your qualifying product.. drop that CD in and let it verify it, then it will continue with the XP installation.

I would check the college book store for a student discount on a full copy or upgrade version of XP PRO often students can get copies for 5-10 bucks.

The Compaq has an AMD Athlon at 600 MHz with 128 megs of RAM. You're confusing me abit with the "drop the cd in.." wouldn't the CD already be in there?

lil Jimmie, I checked and the prices are about the same as anywhere else. They go through eFollet.com and the XP upgrade is $100. But then, I would have an extra upgrade.

XP would run like a dog with a 128Mb of ram, 256 is ok and 512 is better.

What he means is the XP cd will be in the cd-rom and when the setup needs to verify that you have legit copy to comply with the upgrade just remove the XP cd and pop in the 98/ME/2000 CD.

But I don't have a CD for 98. All I have is the restore CDs that came with the computer, will those work?

Edit: So if I add memory and go ahead and upgrade the desktop, then I couldn't use it again for the new build, right? I would have to buy another upgrade for the new pc, correct?

Nope not for a clean install but as an upgrade only.

When you build a new PC you can get a OEM full version of XP Home to install for around $91.00 USD or an OEM XP PRO for $139.00 USD

Cool

XP, be it retail, OEM or upgrade can only be installed on one PC, period.

Your options are to upgrade the Compaq and purchase another copy of XP when you build a new PC. Or remove it from the Compaq by reformatting the drive in order to use it on the new PC. This method will probably require a call to MS. No big deal, you will be prompted when you try to activate it. I would add at least another 128M of RAM if I was going to upgrade the Compaq.

Save the upgrade for the new PC and purchase a qualifying OEM OS such as WIN98. When you load the upgrade XP on the new PC it will start the install, stop and ask for a qualifying OS. You would then put in the full version of WIN98 or 2000. It will read the CD to verify that it is a full version and then ask for the XP CD and complete the install.

Confused,

Based on what you told me, it seems the best route would be to add memory and upgrade the Compaq, and just purchase a full verson of XP Pro for the new build.

Thanks to all!!
