Should I do it today?

I am going to reinstall Windows XP Home so I can start over and have a smooth running system. The question is when. I was having problems with errors, restarts, and programs dissapearing untill last night when I downgraded my computer to 256 MB of RAM. All of the problems magicaly went away. Should I reinstall Windows now before I get some compatible RAM? Would it make a difference? I also have an IBM Deskstar hard drive but appearantly it is not an affected model. I am eager to start over with this thing I just don't know if I should do it now or not.

Get the new RAM first, unless you're having other problems as well.

From you description it doesn't appear that you need to reinstall XP. You problem was RAM. Notice how it cleared up after taking out one of the sticks. XP is particular about RAM. If using more than 1 stick try to keep it matched.

There were other problems that weren't fixed with the RAM such as taking 3 minutes to boot up even in safe mode. I reinstalled Windows today and it is working great.

Be aware that Windows XP is really picky about RAM.

How picky is it? When I first bought the computer it had one 256 MB stick of Samsung PC2700 DDR RAM. A few months later I went to the same computer shop and bought another 256 MB stick of Samsung PC2700 DDR RAM. That's when all the troubles started. I exchanged that stick for another and it didn't help. I was using the computer like that for monthes with random restarts and errors popping up everywhere. Now I just have the original stick in there. The only difference between the two is that one has chips on one side and the other has chips on two side. They both work fine alone. If I want to buy another 256 MB so I can have 512 MB again. What should I buy? What is the most common? (single sided or double sided) Should I by some more double sided Samsung RAM? The Samsung RAM is working fine I don't need Crucial or Geil right now.

HiHo--- Don't mix single/double sided RAM sticks. 99.9 % of the time you'll have problems.
