personal web server with cgi perl
Hello. I have a Pentium P200 with 40 giga HD running Windows98 second edition on a local LAN with high speed shaw cable connection. I have downloaded perl, oracle 8i peronsal edition. I have a webpage at geocities free host but I think I need to run a web server with peronal web server of windows or something in order to get html form input to code some cgi perl programs.
I am more comfortable with windows 98 platform but if it is a hog to run, I wouldn't mind installing and learning Linux, apache or PHP. The trouble is windows and Linux can't co-exist and I need to get into the complication of partitioning my HD and reboot windows98 or linux everytime. Plus I got norton systems works and ad-aware, messenger, yahoo, stuff that runs only on windows. I am trying to learn cgi perl programming by actually doing it on my PC with a web page html form input. Think I need to run my own web server, don't know how.

You might try this question in either the programming or Internet forums . . . you might get more informed answers.
To install personal web server on your Win98 machine, just add it from Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel, go to the Setup tab, and under the Network options, place a checkmark next to Personal Web Server. You'll want your Win98 Cd handy, or the .cab files in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. For the programming side of things, check in with the experts over in that forum. And actually, I've found Windows and Linux to coexist fairly well [so long as the hard dirve is large enough!]. If you go that route, Linux will add a bootloader & manage the partitioning. Best of luck . . . Gary |

Thanks Gary for your timely help on the Personal Web server install. I could use it to learn ASP stuff. I will post on internet forum group again.
I think I will need Sambra, Apache server and a domain name server probably comes with Apache server. Probably best to start talking to my Shaw cable tech. support first, to see if my IP address is static enough. I think it is. I want to reduce the cost to minimum since I am doing it for my own learning not for profit business purposes so no sense incurring a lot of costs. |
