Upgrade to XP-"Device will not start"

I have just completed, dare I say, "successful", upgrade from Windows 98 to XP. This is my third one in 3 days. This one is giving me fits. It started when the device manager reported a problem w/ VGA card. troubleshooter said to uninstall and then use add hardware wizard to install. Well that was the wrong answer. I apparently have lost some files integral to start up of device.
Here's the specs on the box-PIII 600Mhz on 83443bx intel based mobo w/AGP support, 384mb pc100 sdram, 200 GB WD HDD w/controller card. The Video Graphics adapter has will not load drivers. On the "Control panel">display>advanced>adapters shows no adapter info. On the display screen itself, it shows DEFAULT MONITOR on______________. In the device manager, it does not list the card by name, which, by the way, is a ASYLUM GeForce 5600 ultra 128mb AGP. I get a message when I try to update drivers, "this device cannot start" (code 10). I've seen the windows file protection screen a few times. I'll be honest, I really do not know what to do here. I need some detailed help, because I am lost on what to do. I tried all of the knowledge based articles, troubleshooters(which are useless, and actually got me into this), and I just cant seem to figure out how to correct. My brain is about turned to oatmeal here.
Any XP gurus out there, I need your help.
Thanks

This is basically what happen to me when I wrote XP over XP
For god sake don't disable the non PNP monitor, because you'll lose your screen completely, that what I did. Hal9000 and another kind fellow gave me some good advice but unfortunely i haven't be able to recover my screen image. See thomsign two threads below

O.K. Here's what I have tried and what has happened when I tried it.
First, started out to install new 200 GB hard drive w/controller card and upgrade to XP in the process. Result, XP loaded but the display properties window showed "VGASave" as the Graphics adapter instead of the Diamond Viper V770Ultra. Device manager showed Nvidia Riva TNT2 Pro but with drivers not installed. I wasn't sure what was what, so I went to troubleshooter. Troubleshooter suggested that I should uninstall the Graphics card in device manager and then reinstall, of course answering yes when message came up "are you sure"?
Here's what I am sure of. A blank screen is sure to follow when you restart. A Microsoft knowledge base article found after the fact states that the plug and play dirver for this card does not match the p-n-p number on the card, thus it does not install. Too late for me, because something else was also wiped out. There is my quandry. I do not know what is missing because I am not entirely familiar with XP file system.
Anyway I switched to a new vid card, because I could not find the necessary driver within my installation of XP.
Is it possible that I eliminated what amounts to the Standard VGA adapter driver or perhaps the VGA driver loading service that XP performs. If someone could point me in the right direction.
I have/or already had installed the most up to date drivers and the windows updates, one of which is a driver update for Nvidia adapters. The first attempt at that update failed to load. The second attempt was successful but it did not improve my situation. Then another attempt to download and install after switching adapters failed as well, in addition to showing me a windows file protection warning for missing files but does not name them. Thank you to all who respond.
