Win98 Sound

Ok, I've installed Win98 on a friends PC that I've just formatted and basically theres no sound. I've never installed this OS before and it is a very old machine. I'm just wondering is there a certain driver I'm missing. Btw it says there is no audio device detected.

Thanks in advance

You will need to find out what sound card it has and install the driver for it. Check with your friend, he may have a cd for the sound card. You may need to open the case and get the name, number or chip numbers off the card. If it has onboard sound see if the motherboard cd is available.

Try to find out more info and post it and someone will help you find a driver.

Hi Mackem,

Also worth looking in the BIOS and checking if there is an option to enable any onboard sound that there may be.

Chers,

Chris.

Getting sound going can be a real problem if you dont have the necessary drivers, sound card driver,( or motherboard installation disk if its onboard). If you dont have either of these try to identify the sound card. if you cant see any name or model number on the card you can obtain a free copy of a little program called Belarc advisor which may be able to indentify it for you and then you can download the drivers from the net for your sound. www.belarc.com
First though. did you have sound on the puter before you formatted it.Maybe it hasnt got a sound card, in which case you will have to install a card.
There is a good program that will help identify your sound card its called AIDA32 and is very thorough. you can get it from here if this link will work. http://www.softpile.com/Utilities/Sy...688_index.html
Its an excellent way of identifying components in your computer.
Hope this helps.
