ok im building my first PC (havent got the parts yet or anything but im thinking ahead here)
and i need an OS obviously and i already have an cd wtih xp on it it was a recovery cd that came with the dell that my sister got i wanted to kno if i could just use the recovery CD to install the OS on my new build instead of buying it for $300 or wut not. i have already used this CD to upgrade my current computer from a '98 to XP its pretty stable but it crashes more that once a day but it did that before i upgraded anyway so is it all right if i just used the recovery CD on my new build even though its not a Dell (my sis's comp is a Dell laptop so my computer *thinks* its a Dell laptop lol) its not really illegal if its for personal use anyway and will there be driver probs since most of my drives are OEM's? so can i? new build specs: asus P4P800 mobo Lite On LTC-48161H 48x24x48x16 Combo Drive, 2MB, OEM PANASONIC JU-256A798P 1.44 MB 3.5 INCH HIGH DENSITY FLOPPY DISK DRIVE, OEM DRIVE ONLY Seagate 120GB 7200rpm EIDE Hard Drive, Model ST3120026A, OEM CORSAIR MEMORY 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200-KIT Value Select Intel Pentium 4/ 3.0C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512KB Cache, Hyper Threading Technology - Retail ATI RADEON 9800XT 256MB DVI/TV 8X AGP RETAIL Last edited by completeandutterNEWB; 12-01-2003 at 08:36 PM. |

no you cannot use thr recover cd on any other computer than the one it came with, it was made special just for that one system and will not work on any other system.
don't even bother trying it will not have everything you will need. also it would not be leagle to do that |

Well, since you haven't yet bought your parts, if you are buying at newegg, you can get XP Home for $91 if you buy it with a peice of hardware (even if you have purchased your parts, you could simply buy a $2 mouse or something).
Here's the link (just scroll down a bit): http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...ws%2Cxp%2Chome |
