Problems going legit
Here's the story. I've been running a hacked version of XP Pro for a while, but it's gotten so cluttered that I wanted to start over and format my hard drive. I've finally gotten so tired of the problems that I just went out and bought the software. Pirated software just isn't worth the trouble.
But here's the problem. I can't get rid of this the hacked XP Pro. Right now I've got C: with that and D: for my documents (with no OS). I want to stop using C: (and take it out of the tower) and just install Windows Home to D:. But D: is NTFS, which means I can't install my copy of 98se to upgrade from. I have no floppy drive in my PC. Why the heck can't I just totally wipe everything from my D: drive and start clean? The Windows XP Home cd I bought just sort of freaks out and says something about an invalid upgrade path. |

My idea was this: Find out what files are on a 98se boot floppy. Burn these to a CD. Boot from that CD and format D:. But I can't find what files you need to do that, and even if I knew what files they were, I'm not sure I could find them to download. I doubt XP has them around.

boot to xp pro and remove any passwords you have then reboot and go in to your bios and set the first boot device to cd place your xp home cd in the drive and boot from that on the first screan select enter to set up windows then aggree to the licence when the cd finds your 2 partitions you get the option to deleat them deleat the partition with xp pro on then make a new partition and format ntfs then install xp home that way you still keep both drives and all your data in the my doc folder and have a new legit xp home on you c drive

Also, just for a point of interest, you wouldn't need to "install" Win 98 anyway. If there is no OS on the drive(s), then XP will prompt you to instert the prior OS into the CD reader. Once verified, then install continues as normal.
