This page cannot be displayed.

Hi all, just found this site. I have a problem. I have a Gateway 950 mzh 190 ram running Windows Me pc.

For the last 2 weeks I have been having problems viewing certain sites I alway's connect to. It display's "This page cannot be displayed". Some sites are ok, but others or not. I am not running a firewall, and secruity is set at default. I am on a dial up connection.

I know you get this when a server is busy or down, but this is an every day thing. I've never had this problem in 3 years of surfing.

I can allways connect to my isp mail, but not Yahoo mail or any link in Yahoo. Some forums or ok, while other's are not.

Gateway has taken me thru a thousand different settings. I just upgraded to IE 6.0 and it didn't fix the problem.

Does anyone have an anwser to what might be causing this problem.

Thanks

What are the sites and what have you changed in your computer since the problems have been happening? I never used a firewall with my dial-up connection. Do the sites work when you disable the firewall?

1. Check your DNS settings.

2. Trying flushing your DNS
if your on Windows XP go to start, then execute and type CMD then on Command Window type ipconfig/flushdns Enter

then give it another try.

Do a find for Hosts and examine the contents.

Thanks for the replies. No I do not have a firewall. Where would I check it to find out?

I did a check to see what DNS was, now that I know I'm running Windows Me. How do I flush the dns with this operating system.

About Host's, do you mean Spywear? I have deleted them with ad-aware. I have only 2 that show up and delete them often.

This morning I was only able to get to my isp mail. Other sites I visit often would not come in. I haven't dl any thing lately except IE 6.0.

Tonight every thing is working ok. That's what's so weird. Sometime's it works, but sometimes it doesn't.

Thanks again

You can also call your ISP to see if they've been working on things in your area. Is Gateway the provider?

Since you have AdAware, I imagine you have an up-to-date antivirus tool also. There is a worm/virus called "qhosts" which can cause a lot of trouble for Internet connections. I don't remember if AdAware detects that one or not. You could do a "double-check" scan with TrendMicro's free online scan "HouseCall" (if the link works! of course) at http://housecall.trendmicro.com

It might just be that your ISP has been working on their servers.

if you have problems getting to housecall on dial-up (I always did) go to www.pcpitstop.com and scan it there.

Back surfing again!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everybody for posting. I forgot to post a follow up on the problem. Last Tuesday, after the 6th call to Gateway, one tech finally came thru. Another had tried this before and it didn't work. The last tech had me to delete Winsock 2 in the registry and it reinstall's automatically, and we also deleted IE 6.0 in add and remove and it also reinstalls by itself.

My pc has worked great since last Tuesday. The tech and all the rest had told me, I was going to have to format the harddrive, and I ask him to go thru the Winsock 2 again. Sure glad I mentioned it. After we hung up, I logged in and have gotten to every web site since.

I knew there had to be a simple solution to the problem.

Thanks to all that posted.
