When booting up Win ME, I get the background screen and a dialog that says browseui.dll has caused an error in explorer.exe and explorer will now close. I am unable to open in safe mode either, the same thing happens. How do I use DOS from a win98 startup disk to fix my problem? I have already tried scanreg /fix and also scanreg restore but neither one helps.

You don't want to boot with a Win98 disk, but your WinMe cd should be OK. Was the procedure from the link below the same as the one you tried? It has to be the WinMe versions of the utilities to work:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q289799 If you tried this already, was your anti-virus running at the same time? If so, try again while your anti-virus isn't running (disable both the bios-protect antivirus and your Windows antivirus... then enable them when everythings Ok again) Best of luck . . . Gary |

WinME browseui.dll error
Thanks Gary.
I will try that, this is a friend's computer, and I didn't have the WinME cd, but I will get it and try that. I didn't know there would be a difference as longas I got to DOS. You know, like with WIN2K you sometimes need a Win98 startup disk to change a program. Thanks a lot, I really learned something from this today. Wayne |

[hi andy - seems like a while back someone tried the Win98 fix in WinMe, and went for a wild ride, but I can't remember it well --- I'll see if I can look it up tomorrow. Since it's an interface issue, WinMe really revamped that whole area (really has the XP feel to it). That's probably why the 98 fix can be unpredictable in ME...
Been crazy busy with holidays! Kids are doing shows, pcs to finish before chimney time = the usual! Have a great Holiday 'cross the Atlantic! ]. . . Gary |

Win Me browseui.dll error
HI Andy,
Thanks for the link, I was able to get to the program manager and remove the Canon version of IE 5, but during this adventure the video driver decided to stop working right. Is there somewhere I can go to get the name of the other control panel applets, like the appwiz for the add-remove programs one? Let me know if that is available. Thanks for the help. Wayne |

Gary and Andy,
Thanks so much for giving me your input! I was able to get the video driver reinstalled, and install Win ME over the top. Your help was absolutely what got me through this. Way to go, oh, and Merry Christmas! Wayne |
