Using W98 fonts in XP
I have heard that there can be problems if you use you old fonts from Windows 9x in XP. Now PC Magazine tip of the day talks about using your old fonts in XP. I never needed to know how to do that but I would like to know just why you occasionally hear that you should not use the old fonts. Anyone have any knowledge on this subject?

Alan-
I have no first hand knowledge on this, but it would be my guess that the reason some older (win9x) fonts work in XP and some won't because some font libraries may not be recognised by XP. Much in the same way some programs will operate in XP and some won't without a patch. I would think it has to do with the way the code for the font (or program) is written. Again, this is just a guess. |

I think this is the PC Magazine article that describes how to do this. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1401354,00.asp
Seems fairly straightforward. I haven't heard anything about a "Windows 98 font" not working in XP. Basically, if they are compatible TrueType or PostScript fonts, they'll work. They usually arrive with a program install, or with the original OS install. What you may have been reading about are some of the cases where the XP feature "Clear Type" (which is a sub-pixel anti-aliasing scheme to help text look better on LCD screens) can have trouble http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp And just about all you'd ever want to know about fonts and XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp The scaling problem might refer to losing custom color settings in your appearance scheme if you choose Large Fonts (the last link in the list of links above) Happy Research . . .
