problems after upgrade to xp (norton)

I will start from the beginning 9 months ago mother-inlaws packerd bell died. I took it to local pc shop they installed new hard drive but had problems installing win 98 from pb recovery disk so I bought a new generic pc from shop. They were then able to install win98 from PB recovery disk. She had some problems in past 9 months (mostly online) which I blamed on old operating system. I recently bought her win xp upgrade everything went fine except I a got message from norton sys. works saying it detected upgrade to OS and I have to uninstall NSW and reinstall it. I tried but could not uninstall all of it. Today i tried manual uninstall as per norton instructions still can't reinstall NSW and recycle bin isn't working so i'm thinking of reformatting HD and then upgrade to XP. The ? is am i going to have problems reinstalling win 98 from packard bell recovery disk or should i just pay the china man to do it for me. Any suggestions or help would be deeply appreciated.

NSW features are pretty much redundant to XP's native features. I uninstalled NSW on my first XP machine and just use the XP utilities now. I did use the Norton AV from the NSW disc and just installed it by itself. Suggest you do an uninstall of all Symantec products on you comp. Then do a Search for anything Symantec or Norton and delete all those files too. Might also check for McAfee on your system. It may have been installed with the original 98 before you upgraded. If you find any McAfee stuff, delete it too. Then reinstall the Norton Anti Virus. Good Luck.

Oops! just reread your post. Thought you had XP already installed. Do an over the top repair with the 98 disk first, then uninstall the Norton stuff, then install the XP upgrade and finally add Norton AV Only.

I know a lot about the recovery process on Packard Bell's they use an extended hidden sector which will have to be reprogrammed, as the hard drive has been replaced, let me know if you want to do it and need some advice.
