Windows 64

Any idea when this will arrive? Or does anyone have experience with the beta? And how is it running?

"Microsoft will support the new AMD Opteron 64-bit processor in the first service pack release of Windows Server 2003, due out by the end of 2003."
-from M$

What about official support for the Athlon-64 (FX)? Haven't heard any dates yet on that.

XP 64bit will be available in the new year. It was hoped to be released with the AMD 64bit processors, but got delayed.

For the rest of us XP sp2 should be out any day now.

I read andyms18a link above, and it's sad that Intel is mentioned a dozen times, but not AMD.

TwoRails, the article talks about Windows (and Windows Server) 64-bit, which has been exclusively Intel (Itanium) up until SP1 in march '03 to support opteron and the new version out in '04 to support AMD64 processors.

OEM_GUY,
I thought windows was going to wait a year or two before releasing another service pack for XP (much to everyone's disapproval), but I am unsure.

OK, I must be misssing something... the link also talks about XP 64:
Quote:
Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003 is a high-performance desktop platform that enables the next generation of powerful Windows-based applications for Itanium 2.
So, are there going to be a dozen "64" OSs? Servier 2003 64, XP 64, Win 64, a special AMD 64...????

Sorry TwoRails I don't want to imply anything, because I really don't know much, but what I do get from the article is that there is a Windows Server 64-bit and a Windows XP 64-bit, one for servers (duh) and one for business/home enthusiasts that will probably later (a few years down the road) turn into the OS for the average consumer.

Makes me nervous why MSFT made no mention of AMD processors....I am about to assemble an Athlon 64 bit FX-51 machine. Well, at least I know it runs 32 bit app's very fast if not anythng else.

This is the best I found from the AMD FAQ page about the FX-51:

Q: Which operating systems will support the AMD Athlon 64 FX processor at launch?

A: The AMD Athlon 64 FX processor is designed to run all 32-bit x86 operating systems. In addition, all major operating systems vendors are expected to support the AMD64 platform including Microsoft, RedHat, SuSE, United Linux (comprised of SuSE, Conectiva, Caldera and TurboLinux), MandrakeSoft and Wasabi.

There will be 2 versions of 64bit XP.
1 for AMD, 1 for the Itanic. The AMD
optimized version has been in Beta since
before the opteron release.

The XP service pack is a long story,
too long to type out on this ipaq ppc
so it'll have to wait till i get back to
my Mac to tell it.

Ok, back at a real keyboard.

XP Sp2 was supposed to include a lot of new features (antivirus, pop-up-blocking, spam filtering, bluetooth support and media feature from XP media edition) but with the delays of Wronghorn these features have been stripped from SP2 and will be included in a future release of XP. This future build has been tentitavely named Windows Elements but will more likely be named XP SE and will be an upgrade to XP. M$ just want to make some more money, and who can blame them.

Windows Elements (XP SE?) will probably be the first XP release to have 64bit processor support, not a full 64bit OS though.

It went Gold beta today from what I was told, should be within a week if that is true. SP2 will now only be security fixes and patches though, you'll have to wait for Elements for new stuff.

And another interesting read about solving buffer over-run problems w/ SP2, which will make some programs incompatible with the new SP. here

My Info was a little off. The XP SP2 was the gold beta and it took a bit more than a week but.

http://theinquirer.net/?article=13247

I have been told it will be a public beta like WMP 9 was so should be available for download soon.
