Angry Fire HELP unable to shut down windows xp pro

Hi,

Im running win xp pro
athlon xp 2600+
asus a7n8x mobo
corsair 1024 ram

Recently i encountered a problem. The pc hangs at windows is shutting down page.

This problem occured after i installed winpoet for my ethernet adsl modem.

i did some research and is wondering could it be due to my pc trying to log off from the network. i aint connected to the internet but under control panel>network connections i see 1394 net adapter enabled. i tried to disable it but my pc hangs at it.

So guys any ideas how do i fix this?

Thanks for ur help

the ieee 1394 is your firewire card on your computer and wont be causing your shut down problems.
The only thing I can sugest at the moment, is to try stripping the startup programs out of the system configuration utility, there may be a program in there at startup causing it to hang when you are shutting down.

I'm confused.
What did you install from Verizon ?
That board already has a LAN connection so you wouldn't need an ethernet card and XP connection wizard will make the dsl connection for you without installing extra software.
Where you asked about our OS and hardware ?
If you just installed software over what was already there that would be your problem.
If any of this fits post back and I'll tell you what to do.

Call the tech support for Singnet and tell them what happened when you installed winpoet.
Make sure they understand that you have XP and an integrated LAN port.
What that means is that you need to set up the XP connection wizard, not load more software on top of it.
Since I've never used Singnet have their techs walk you through the install.
It should take 6 to 8 minutes.
It sounds like they just sent you their install package without bothering to check your computer's specs. and make the necessary adjustments.

This is the full tech definition of the ethernet : http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/E/Ethernet.html
From a practical point of view just consider it the way you can use a DSL connection.
YES KEEP THE MODEM.
If you installed an ethernet pci card remove it, you will be using the on board lan.
The connections are from phone jack to Modem and from Modem to PC.
Uninstall winpoet and then call Singnet tech support and have them walk you through the set up in XP, also do your e-mail account at the same time.
Your shut down problem is caused by winpoet, you don't need to use it.

Go into Restore and pick a date before you installed winpoet and go back to it.
If that won't work copy all your data off the computer and reformat and reinstall XP.
Next time round hook up everything as suggested.
For future reference chapter 12, pgs. 214 -218 of "Windows XP for Dummies" will give you a clear explanation of how to go about it, for now read it and then call tech support for a walk through.
ISPs have their quirks and the first time round you should follow their instructions.

back to hanging at shut down

Well, now that we have all of the ethernet problems sorted out, let's go back to the original subject of this thread...

I have the same problem. XP Pro hangs at "windows is shutting down".

No new hardware or software installed recently and I run anti-virus updated nearly every day along with anti-spyware scans after every internet use.The problem occurred once before about a month ago and when I went surfing for an answer I found a guy who stated that running office XP could sometimes cause this. I un-installed office XP and (sure enough) the problem went away. Now, a few weeks later it has returned for no apparent reason.

Any thoughts?

Running XP Pro on home-built machine with 1.1 G processing, 512 meg RAM, 40 gig drive, HS cable internet on home LAN. (No, I don't have any other ethernet hardware stacked on. Just using the stock ethernet adapter built into the motherboard, connects through LAN to share internet connection with the rest of the network).

Everything else works perfectly.

Go here : http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php

If it's a shutdown problem with XP they've got it covered.

Whoops!

I know the flames are coming, but I must fess up...

After finding a disk left in the CD burner and removing it, the XP shut-down procedure is normal.

I was an appliance repairman for many years (still own another business doing natural gas appliance install and repair) and this certainly reminds me of a rookie repairman mistake.

I used to watch these new guys go in to look at a furnace that wasn't working, immediately get out their multi-meters and start tersting ciruits everywhere tracing backward and forward through several circuits. One of my directions to these rookie guys was to always check the basics first...

Is the AC power switch turned on?

Is the gas turned on?

Is the thermostat turned up?

Sometimes we don't see the problem when it's staring us right in the face!!
