Maximum files per directory

Used to be a DOS limitation.
Now in 98, ME & XP what is the maximum:
1) directories under the root,
2) files in any give directory,
3) combination of maximum within a folder, its subfolders & files,
is there a difference between the O.S.es?
anyone have these facts memorized?

All three OS you are limited only by space on your drive. System will get slower as you cluttler and fill it up, but no limits to any of your items. HTH
