XP - Home or Pro?
I have one computer with XP Pro... and another i am still building. My friend believes that Home is alot better than Pro... he thinks it's alot more on the stable side. I am also considering Windows 2000 Pro... but he says that 2000 has the worst of ME and 98 in it. Can someone help me figure this out??

I try not to put down anybody's opinions and thoughts but I must say that is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard.
There is no stable difference between Home and Professional for XP. The only difference between the two is Home you cannot make use of connecting to domains, with Pro you can. Me is to be known as the worst. 98 was the best till 2000 came out and that topped it. |

ME and 98 are based on the same kernel, while 2000 and XP are based on the more stable NT kernel, so there's no comparison between the two kernels.

Personally, I never had major issues with Win ME on my home systems or on systems I've sold... I still think a lot of the so called issues with WinME are hearsay and nothing more... 98 used to be a real piece of crap when it came out too and nobody wanted to switch from the "stability" of Win95. I could see it now, if MS had released another in the Win9X series, suddenly WinME would be good... just as 98 was.
XP Home is the way to go unless, as mentioned, you need to connect to a domain, OR, you are building a dually CPU system.

I thought XP Home can handle dual cpus?!
Anyways, I have ME on my dell and my only complain is that it is a memory hog. If it's left around for awhile, it's performance will significantly decrease. It even freezes when we don't restart once in a while. On the other hand, my XP Pro has been on since it's 1st POST The only times I have to restart is to do a surface scan or to change some settings in BIOS.

XP Pro is what I use. More stable than 98, and overall is better.
Windows 2000 was very good but you cannot get it anymore, since M$ stopped selling it.

XPHome vs Pro
I have not had any experience with Pro but I have had with 95, 98se, XPHome, and ME. 95 was so long ago I don't remember it but I just upgraded my Dell with Home and it is far more stable than 98 was. More adjustable too. I can configure S/U and leave it as I want it, switch users and I can use my flight sim and not have to reboot after every session. My daughter has ME on her Dell and she curses it regularly.
My 98 was a freeze fanatic. Her ME is also. If the XP stops I just reset and we're back in business. I have 2000 on my laptop and its the best of all of them. If I buy a new PC it will have 2000 on it.

How come? I tried to get both ME and 2000 back in Mex, and no way a dealer was carrying it!
Dat's bizarre. |

XP Pro or Home is no more stable than the other. Pro has more networking and Administration tools than the Home version as well as being able to support dual cpu's and Domain logins. Both support Hyper Threading.
Newegg still list 2000 Pro and I still see it on the shelves at the local brick and mortar stores. Running 5 of mine on XP PRO and one running 2000 Pro.

My newer machine has XP home on it. I'm happy with it. It installed very clean and trouble-free. And has supported everything I have tried to do. Even some older legacy stuff. I don't think XP Pro is worth the extra $ for most of us.

Exactly... MOST people DON'T need XP Pro.... I see too many people caught up in the name "Pro"... they get it because it "sounds" better and in reality, they have no idea what is different about it.

I do... I don't mind the new styling, the eye candy as everyone calls it... but I can't stand the new start menu... I flip it back to the old one.

Home vs Pro
I kinda like the new Start Up
If you are networking you need more security.
