"windows explorer has encountered...."

I was working on a new build and after I installed a driver from Lexmark for the printer, I started getting an error that said, "Windows explorer has encountered a problem and will have to shut down." The Lexmark docs said even if the "unsigned drivers message comes up, just click on continue anyway" and "install with confidence." Anyway after flinging that CD out the window and into somebody's backyard, I did a sytem restore all the way back to right after I finished installing XP and had downloaded the first load of Windows Updates. It did not correct the problem. I have not found any Microsoft KB article that addresses this particluar scenario explicitly, although some address the error. The articles that do address the error do not explain what files are damaged and where to restore them from. Can any one help.
