Registry Repair

Doing some tweaking on my system I deleted some registry entries during the process. I have decided the tweaks were more of a hastle than anything. When I went to reverse the tweaks the ones which required me to delete entries in the registry I can not put back.

I don't not have system restore enabled. My question is this is there a simple tool (software program) out there that scans and replaces items missing from the registry. Or does windows have a built in registry scanner that I can use to do the same task. Thanks

When you boot up right after the BIOS scren press F8 and if you don't see a menu of choices press F8 again so you see the menu of different boot options and you can try booting to last known good configuration...
In your registry under local machine/system you'll see current control set then current control set 001 and current control set 003. Those 001 and 003 are the backups of the hardware settings in the registry and when you boot to last known good configuration I believe it uses those to revert back to...

In my opinion, it's easier to do a system restore.

start\all programs\accessories\system tools\system restore

the wizard is self-explanitory.

any programs installed or data captured since the restore point you use, will be kept.

good luck

Nice Stylin, but he said he doesn't have system restore enabled so therefore he can't use it.
Try what Kendall said or I guess if I read right from the article, install SP1 and it should resolve the conflict.

Did you write down what you did because to put them back you just go to the folder they were in and right click on it and highlight new in the popup menu and you'll see the choices to add a new key or whatever it was you deleted. You just need to name it exactly what it was before, and give it the value it should have...

as I understand it, xp will automaticly make a restore point only when something in the system is changed, add software or hardware, the folder where it is , will only get so big and then its a fifo, first in, first out type and will not get any bigger.
so there is no need to worry about it taking up a lot of disk space.
you also can creat a restore point manually any time you want, after tweaking or setting something to your likeing.

I fell it is a very bad thing to do by turnning it off and dissable any chance of doing a recovery if the time of need should arise.

I went and check and found out that my system resotre was indeed inabled, but when I tried to use it it said it was unable to complete the task. I managed to reverse some other tweaks I did but I did not back up the reg like I should so the deleted files are gone for good. I read that using last known good config will only affect certain changes made to the registry and all other changes will remain. So I did a reinstall of XP and everything is OK. Now I will back up the registry before making any future changes. Thanks to all who replied.
