What Is The Processes Tab ?
Hi From Texas !
When you do the 3 finger salute and bring up theTask Manager box on the monitor , there is the 'Processes" tab with it's long list of stuff. It must have something to do with processing I am sure. How do I use this , like maybe, deleting one or some if needed in a jam on the computer.-------------------Don |

Thanks andyms18a !
Thanks for your reply. You have given me a lot to digest on this page. I was just wondering about this. Do you know the command prompt to use something like a scan disk to check the PROTECTED files and folders? It has been a long time for me to do this and I have forgot. ----Thanks again andyms18a--------Don of South Fort Worth |

If you want to run ScanDisk, goto 'My Computer' and right click on the drive you want to scan. Then goto properties and to the 'Tools' tab. Under 'Error-Checking' is the button you want.

Ah!- Ha !----so that's where it is.I will go there and run it for the heck of it. I remember that it runs when a bad shutdown takes place and it has been a long while that has taken placed. Thanks---------Don |

Scandisk is always good but I recommend running Defrag (right under ScanDisk) as it rearranges files for faster performance and even runs ScanDisk automatically before Defragging, thereby killing 2 birds with one click, so to speak.

Do I have bad copies of Win 98 and Win XP? When I run a defrag, it takes all of 8 minutes and yet a thorough scandisk takes 10+ minutes. I know defrag will check the disk for errors but I've never seen it run a scandisk prior to defrag. Is there some setting I'm missing? TIA |

From M$:
"You cannot defragment volumes that the file system has marked as dirty, which indicates possible corruption." Sorry I didn't explain further. Defraging has to do with arranging fragments of files on a HD closer together for better performance. If there are lost fragments (files with no link to any other files on the file system) then Defrag will actually tell you to run ScanDisk to fix the problem. So my theory was why run ScanDisk if Defrag will tell you when to run it when needed? Well I shouldn't have said that b/c Scandisk also checks for disk errors and more so running ScanDisk BEFORE Defrag is recommended. I've never had a physical disk error but who knows, you might. And FalconFan, as you might have guessed from reading above, the actual ScanDisk program checks many more things than does the defrag program. Defrag just wants to arrange files, and ScanDisk wants to check everything that may be wrong with a disk. In Win98, 1% through 9% is actually the running of Scandisk in the Defrag program. |

Also, the times you receive from running Defrag is because it runs through making sure all files are arranged close to each other. If you run Defrag everyday then those files will not need moved and all files will be accounted for. ScanDisk does so much more, even if you do run it everyday. It checks for physical drive errors, file and folder errors, lost file fragments, invalid files, files and folders with invalid file names (long-file names etc), dates, or times, and files that overlap the same disk space. It AUTOMATICALLY corrects damaged files, relocates files, and helps you regain unused disk space. So for Scandisk to check each file on your computer for valid times, cross-linked and lost fragments, as well as a surface scan of your entire drive, you can see why it would take longer than just running through making sure all like files are close to each other.
*EDIT* Remember what you are doing Falcon is a thorough disk scan, which is why it takes a while to complete. Defrag doesn't do everything that a "thorough" scan does. But you are right Falcon, it doesn't run the full ScanDisk before Defraging. Sorry I wasn't more clear.
