Not getting 1200x1600 resolution in XP

I have a dual boot machine. In Win2000 under control panel/display/settings I can move the resolution slider over to the right and get my monitors resolution to run at 1200x1600 (its a Dell 20" LCD)...but in Win XP the slider does not have that option...it does not go up to 1200x1600.

Is there a way to change this so I can get a full 1200x1600 resolution in WinXP?

Thanks

Do you have the latest drives for your video card installed in XP?

I dont know. Are the drivers a function of updating XP or going to the website of the video card manufacturer?

I just finished downloading all the XP critical updates. I looked through the non-critical updates and drivers and did not see any update that relates to video or screen resolution. I will need to open my case to check to see what video card is in there ( I did not make this computer). Will go to card manufacturers website and download latest video drivers. Although, I still don't know why I can get full resolution in Win2000 but not XP.

You may have better drives for Windows 2K than for XP. Strange, but it is possible. Check in Device Manager iin XP to see what card Windows thinks you have.

Also, see that your Monitor is selected correctly as well.

More than likely it is the driver. XP will not show that resolution if it thinks that your monitor/video card is not capable of running it. Find out who makes your video card and go download the latest XP driver for it.

I opened up my computer to see what was in the AGP slot and surprise....nothing! Just a dark brown empty lonely slot looking back up at me.

I did note thet the mobo is a MSI 6714. I also noticed the manufacture date on the board is 1996?...can this be right? I already know most of us do not regard MSI very highly.

I went into the MSI site, did a search and found this board is not even listed in the site. (No surprise given its age)

My guess here, and correct me if I am wrong, is that MSI no longer supports this board and therefore has no driver up dates for the soldered in video chip?

ARE there driver updates for video chips soldered to the motherboard?

Are there BIOS updates for such an old mobo?..would that increase the video resolution to 1200x1600?

Is there a website which has driver upgrades for "old" boards?

Looks like I should just get the boss to cough up a couple hundred bucks for a video card? I use the computer to run 3-dimensional graphics intensive navigational software on a research vessel.

Whats the best thing to do here?

Thanks

Does your mobo look like this?

http://www.dljsystem.com/products/ma...i_6714-040.jpg

That's what comes up for MSI 6714. It looks too new, though, and it doesn't even have an AGP slot.

To find out exactly what kind of integrated video you have, you can download a diagnostic utility like SiSoft Sandra or AIDA32. With that information, you may be able to track down some driviers.

If not, a video card would be the best option.

Isn't that brown slot the AGP slot to the right of the 3 PCI slots?...on the lower right hand side of the board.

Thanks!

No, unfortunately it isn't. That's a proprietary slot for addons like modems. Since your board doesn't have an AGP slot, your upgrade possibilities are limited. You would need to get a PCI video card; here is a list at newegg: http://www.newegg.com/app/manufactor...alog=48&DEPA=1
Select "PCI" as the slot type to get a list.

One of the upper-end Radeons would work. The 9000 and 9200SE cards have dual outputs, which is nice.
