Win ME Dispaly
I have a Win ME on one of my computers it was working OK until my 3 year old son was messing around yesterday on the keyboard and the computer boot into safe mode (We usually press the space bar to turn it ON). I rebooted form safe mode to normal and the display was stuck at 640x480 since then. I rebooted several times, deleted and re-installed the video drivers without success. After many tries I re-installed Win ME. Win Me installed successfully but still can get the display to go higher than 640x480. There are options in the color display (16, 256 and 16 bit high color). Everytime I select 16 bit color and 1024x768, it automatically go back to 256 and wont change the display. The displays stays the same even if i picked 256 and 1074x768. I have tried this many times. This is an HP Kayak with HP monitor. All other prog works but just can get the display. Thanks for your help.

Redo40, Yes I did. Everytime I select 16 bit high color and 1024x768 it automatically go back to 256 color. Then when I applied the settings it just go back to 640x480.

What does the device manager show, and does it detect new hardware each time you boot and prompt you to search for drivers for the new hardware?? I'm just trying to think of what your son could have done that could have caused that to happen... The thing to do would have been a scanreg /restore and restored your registry to a point before your son messed with it or a system restore if it is enabled, but now that U reinstalled those are out, so it does just sound like your going to have to work on drivers. Don't HP's come with a system restore disk??? That is what I think you'll need to get it all back to the way it should be...

What model is the hp and have you or has it been upgraded at all? Video drivers are what it sounds like to me (as kt suggested, should be on restore disc). WinME has a lousy driver database. You might be able to find them on HP's site or try driverguide . It is a free site all you need to do is register.
Another thought - have you been to windows update since reinstall? cat

Thank you all. The problem is solved. I downloaded a driver (actually Win95 driver) from HP site and it works. Dont ever trust the Driver from Win ME CD. Once again thanks to all. That why I love this site for almost 5 years now.
