Disk defrag, cannot go past 10%
Hi, I have not encountered this problem before. I always close all running programs, shutdown anti-virus, and screensaver before I run the defragment program and there has never been a snag. But this time it can't seem to go beyond 10%. I think it might be re-starting itself over and over, but I watched it for a while and it goes pretty fast until it hits 10% and then it just sorta stalls. Anyone have an idea what else I might try to get it to finish?
thanks in advance jhona |

I had the same problem and it eventually turned out to be spyware trying to open an internet connection during the defrag.
Do you get a message similar to "restarting, drive contents have changed"? Thats what I was getting. Stopped everytime at 10%. Just my 2 cents...

I used to do it the way you describe until folks here tuned me up to the idea of booting to SAFE mode and running the defrag from there. You may want to try it. And it stays at 10% for a long time anyway. (98se)

johana,
Run the defrag in safe-mode. Then you are sure that there is nothing "hiding" in the background. Carl |

Some times you have to turn off all programs and reboot with them off. If that still doesn't do the trick, then there is, as mentioned, something "hiding" somewhere...

At the 10% mark, Defrag is "optimizing your program starts". It does this using the info collected by Taskmon and recorded in \Windows\Applog.
But, on the faster PCs and disks, the affect is nominal. Run MSCONFIG and UNselect Taskmon and reboot. Then, from Explorer (ensure that show all files is set), browse to \Windows\Applog, select all files and delete them. Empty the recycle bin and try the defrag again. If you are using win98 then this is what I do. I first replace the defrag.exe with the one from windows ME. Next shut down all programs except systray and explorer. Run defrage.exe and you will notice a big difference. You used to be able to get the windows ME defrag.exe on many online sites. If you need some help send me a PM.

Get Diskeeper. It's the best defrag program out there in my opinion and will defrag you drive in a fraction of the time compared to the defragger in win98.

One of the reasons that it is "fast" is because it doesn't defrag (consolidate) free space. It only defrags files.
(at least I believe that it doesn't!) |

For elrod 13
Well I tried to find a way to get the defrag.exe from windows ME but just couldn't find it. If you can help me in this area I would be really grateful. And thanks Heon2574 for the idea of Diskeeper. Going to look into that. I hope it is freeware or there is one similar that is, for I am truly fundless these days, long story...
bye for now jhona

same prob
I had the same problem but if you go onto 'show details' it shows it step by step and it gets to 10% and restarts but does the bit its done again quickly so it gradually gets to a higher % each time so it will eventually work just leave it a few hours

start up and press F8 before windows starts up,then select safe mode with arrows and it should then let you defrag.
