Hi frankie385,
You'll want to install Service Pack 1 (SP1) at the very least since it has many patches. Then check the Windows Update site and install any new Critical Updates and Windows XP patches that apply. |

Don't worry about where to find patches or which to get. Once your OS is installed the first place I go is to windowsupdate.com. There M$ will tell you everything you need to d/l to make your OS secure. Make sure you bookmark and check back regularly with the site for any new patches/fixes.

When you go to Windows Update, get the critical updates for sure. I would stay away from suggested driver updates, though.
One of the critical updates will be for SP1. |

One thing I have found with Windows Update, when you download Windows Media Player (which I often do as the last item to add) you need to go back to Update and run it again. There is a security patch that relates to WMP that isn't recommended until after you have installed the latest WMP.

Also, when you get ready to purchase XP Pro, you can look for a version that already includes SP-1. That way you won't have to download the service pack, only any other updates as suggested.
