locking folders?

Is this a possibility? Putting a password on certain folders?

It depends. Do you want to lock them from certain users on your machine? If so, just specifiy in the folder's properties who can and can't access it, assuming you're adminning the system.

If you just want to lock certain foders in case your PC falls in the wrong hands, then no. Your security will (hopefully) come from a decent login password on all the accounts on that system.

One thing you can do is use winzip (or similar) and archive the folder with a password, and then delete the original. This will be a bit of a hassle, but might work for you.

Windows 2000 Professional, but I am also interested in doing the same thing if possible to my Windows 98 SE partion as well.

Yes, I want certain folders locked, not just keep people out.

In Windows 2K it is pretty easy on an NTFS partition. Just go to the folder's properties and click on the Security tab. You can then allow or deny permissions to whomever you want.

With Windows 98, though, you are pretty much out of luck. Win9X doesn't really have any security to speak of.

Win98SE, you have utilities like Folder Guard (paid), and an equally good utility called Fake Folder from http://www.freewarestore.de. Try the latter. It works great and its free.

I am not interested in signing permissions, yada yada yada. I just want to lock certain folders with a password or something like that.

What is the file name in the downloads folder if you don't mind me asking? I know its a stupid question.

Sauron,
I really am so sorry. I did not realize that it has been such a long time. Fake Folder is freeware and the last listed site was the URL I gave you above.
I have the program on Hard disk and can send it to you (if the mods do not think that is unacceptable).

Please PM me if you need it.

What it does is let you protect a folder and its contents using a password, so that only those that know the pass can open the folder.

Sauron;
As long as the file is not too large us a program like MaxCrypt (free) from the link below. Not only will it be protected by a username and password but it will also be encrypted.

Sauron,
Once the setup has been completed, if you rebbot your computer and right click any folder, you will see a new menu item called "Protect". Click it and you will be asked for a password. Once that is done, all that anyone can see who clicks on that folder is the system control panel. To see the folder again, you need to right click and select "Unprotect", and enter the password.
