Question Com port 2

Hello all. Hope this is in the correct forum
I'm having trouble getting both serial ports to work.
In my win2K machine with Epox 8K-ta3 Mobo, I cant seem to make the com 2 port operable. Bios is set to "auto" in both com 1, and com 2.
Device mgr. only see's com port 1. I need both, as I have Garmin gps plugged into com 1, and Palm Cradle plugged into com port 2.
Thanks a million for advice .

Hi,
here we go:
Now enter your bios and change the settings to following.

Com1 IRQ4 Port 03f8
Com2 IRQ3 Port 02f8
Note that com1 &3 are working together and also com2 & 4.
Hope this helps

Thank you Hpro
I did as you instructed, but com2 is still not showing up in Device manager.
Any other ideas? Thank you kindly

There is a drop down menu in the Palm Hot Sync mgr that asks what serial port to connect to. Com2 in not listed there either.

OK what you have to do is - go into save mode and then delete the com ports..
In the bios set OS plug and play to = none..
Restart and then in the control panel let win2k scan for new hardware.. I think it will find it. disconnect everything from the USB port etc - do you have a winmodem there? if yes what port number it uses?

No sir, No winModem. So, I reboot to safe mode, go to control panel, system, Device mgr, and uninstall the com ports.
Then I shut down, and remove all the cables from com ports, and usb ports. Then power back up, go to bios, and set PnP to "no". (although i think it is already). Hit F-10 to save, and restart. Then go back to Device mgr, Right click on Com Ports and scan for new hardware. Then shut down again, and plug in the Serial cables, and usb cables.
Does that sound correct to you?
Thanks again

Yes - this would be about the way - before you should make a hardware back up in the control panels System Icon so if something happen then you just change by the bootup menu the hardware configuration.. just in case..
it's in System Icon > Hardware > Hardware Profiles - just copy the original one and name it backup or likewise..

Unhappy

Well sir, I must admit failure I did exatally as you said, and still no com2 is seen in Device mgr.
I have thouroughly searched the Mobo manual to see if there is a jumper, but alas,,,,,,,, none is provided.
Any other ideas, or should I just get an adaptor, and run the second device on usb. If I do that, I'll need to get a usb hub, as I am out of usb ports.
Thank you again

Thanks a million Andy
Another problem has popped up. I d/l'd the comdisable proggy, but when I open the proggy it just flashes on the screen for a second, and goes away.If I go to the command prompt and type in the instructions, it says that that is not a internal, or external, or batch file program, and wont exicute.
The instructions at the microsoft site are minimal.
Guess I just dont know how to operate the darn thing.
Appreciate the help tho.

Hi there,
what you need to do is
rename the file you downloaded to something easy - not more than 4-8 letters
then copy the file to the ROOT of C:\
then start > Run >enter and type CMD and enter and then type the filename and enter - this should do it.. otherwise send me the link to the program..

Beats the heck outta me H . I cant make the darn thing open. It just flashes on the screen for a second when i open it, then goes bye bye . Oh well, such is life.
Andy. No modem. DSL Gateway and nic.
Much as I hate to say it, I better give up on this, and just get a Serial to usb adaptor and run the Palm Cradle off of usb.

I THANK you BOTH very kindly

Hey Mr Tink.
the ifles name is this the same as this one ? COMDisable.MSI
Si if its just flasehs open for a second or so the may the file hasnt downloaded and somehow produces a error.
The file size has to be 186Kb and it is a Windows Installer Packet.
I use the link Andy placed to download it.

Yes sir H, that is correct. It is 186KB, and a windows installer package. It does NOT however have the .MSI extention on it anywhere.
Yes, it does just flash on the screen for a second. Very strange . I uninstalled it, and re downloaded it, and reinstalled. Same thing. It DOES say Beta tho. Meebe it just dont like my system
Maybe I dont have the Windowes Installer program?????
