Win XP and Wind 98 dual boot setup ??

How can I set up an XP computer for dual boot, i.e. boot into XP or 98 ??

I got a new computer already set up with Windows XP Professional.

My old computer had a 8G hard drive running Windows 98.

I installed my old computer's hard disk into the new XP computer. I thought XP will recognize that the old hard drive is running Win 98 and give me the option to set up the XP computer for dual boot.

The XP computer does recognize the old drive. I can access files on the old drive. However, the XP computer did not ask me the option to set up dual boot.

Can I still set up the XP computer for dual boot?

Seeing that you have already installed XP, you're going to have to work backwards. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=24831

The easiest way to create a multi-boot is to install the oldest O/S first, followed by the next oldest, etc. Each O/S gets their own partition and/or HDD.

[edit]: What you may be able to do is make the 98 HDD the primary drive and the XP drive the secondary. Then, boot from the XP CD and run the repair console. Type in "fixmbr" and "fixboot", each entered seperately. That may do the trick.

The easiest way to create a multi-boot is to,,,

T he real easy way is tyo get a program called parition magic.
I have been partitioning HD's since I started with PC's and wouldn't go any other way.
Its good to know how to use FDISK etc... but for ease of use and dependability (i sound like a add) its the way to go.
It comes with a program called Boot magic
that may even switch the order of the OS's so U can set 98 first.
Probably does.
I have an older ver so checking it will not help.
good luck

The computer will boot to the first hard drive it finds. Since you already have W98 as an independent drive, do this.

Put the XP in a HOT SWAP bay as CS (Cable Select) #1. Put the W98 CS#2. When you want to boot to W98, just pull out the Hot Swap Bay. When you want to boot to XP, push in the Hot Swap Bay. Again, the computer will boot the first drive it finds.

To set up W98 for you new computer, pull the XP drive and use the enum trick on that drive. It's really better than making it dual boot from a boot manager. Some day, you'll just want to get rid of W98.

With both drives installed(XP master,Win98 slave),boot from the XP cd,after XP does it's thing, click on install,XP will ask if you want to reinstall or do a repair on a existing OS,choose repair,XP will reinstall itself, recognize the other OS and afterwards you will have dual boot.
If you have added any updates to XP,you will have to reinstall them.

Most modern BIOS include a built-in boot menu option during boot up. On my motherboard I press F11 at boot up to bring up the boot menu. The menu then gives options to boot from: 1st IDE Drive, 2nd IDE drive, Floppy, CDROM, SCSI, or USB device. If your motherboard has this option (check your user's manual) you can then install your 2nd hard drive (with Windows 98) to the Secondary IDE Controller. This way both drives can be configured as masters. Then you can select to boot to either one utilizing the boot-up menu. Each OS is then independent of the other and the one selected to boot to will then appear as Drive C.

Welcome Techie52. You've described pretty much how my dual boot is set up. XP on one hdd and 98se on another. Only I use the Esc key to bring up the boot menu. This is with an Asus P4PE/L mobo, not the one in my sig. Just like have two computers in one box.
