Persistent Hanging in Win98 SE

I'm helping a non-profit (dance studio) with a roughly six year old computer so they can play their music from it. Everything is fine except that I keep getting never ending (though sporadic) machine hangings, always accompanied with the blue screen and a message like the following:

"An exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C00051BB in VxD VMM(01) + 000041BB. This was called from 0028:C024C5D5 in VxD VMM(13) + 000005D5. It may be possible to continue normally" It usually isn't possible, nor can the machine be turned off properly. So I turn off the power, reboot (disc exam due to improper shutdown, etc), and all is well until the next one.

What's going on?

Tom

128k of memory, not sure of the chip, but think it's Pentium II 300 mHz or so. No antivirus program (machine never on line). Usually running laplink 200 or MusicMatch Jukebox (one or the other) and nothing else. The vxd numbers are random as far as I can tell (they are different every time).

boot it to safe mode and defrag it then run disk cleanup. See if that helps at all. Isn't VMM virtual machine? It might need to be updated.

I'd still recommend an antivirus scan - Laplink is connecting to another computer, which could be a source of infection. Just to rule out virus trouble. Might want to do the same for spyware (you can use a free-for-personal-use version of AdAware or Search&Destroy, download links are available all over, also at http://www.spywareinfo.com)

If the machine is running MusicMatch constantly, it might need rebooting (normal rebooting, that is) about once a day [usually just shutting down at night while not in use should do it, then start it up again in the morning]. Lots of multimedia programs "leak memory" (use up system resources such as "heaps" and don't free them up again when done) - and the system eventually runs low & runs into trouble.

Sometimes I recommend downloading a newer version of IE just for an easy way to get lots of system files updated. Wierd, but for some cases, it works (it would also net you a new Virtual Machine, in case catfishjoe is on the right track). And there's always the SwissArmyKnife approach - the over-the-top reinstall http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=70846

Hopefully, though, good old System File Checker (andy's suggestion) will have fixed you up already, and you're already celebrating with a cinnamon-topped egg nog

A virus can cause that. Run a good virus checker first, then read over this:

Sarge,

The link to the "VSD Blue Screen of Death Fix" says that, when the downloaded file is unzipped, a VXD.bat file will appear. What I got was a VXD.exe file. Should I worry about the discrepancy?

No need to worry, that's nothing to worry about. Also, did you run a updated virus scan?

you sure it wasn't a "****.vxd.exe"? two file extensions are bad!
If it was, I think it is something to be concerned about.

Thanks. Actually, it was VXD_FIX.EXE. From what's been said so far in this thread, I think that's ok!

The file itself doesn't have 2 extensions, the write up on it said the file would open as a .bat file, but it unzips showing the exe extension. I have used this program more than once and there isn't any problems with the file itself.

Tom, make sure and take the above suggestions and run an updated virus scan to be sure a virus is not causing your problems.
