After downloading the newest Norton Antivirus update, I was told to restart...
After the login screen, windows seems to take a long time to process anything. The computer does not freeze up, but I cannot browse My Computer or Startmenu. So all I can do is move the mouse around. I tried Ctrl+Alt+Del to see if anything is happening: No applications running All processes seem to be in place, but the only thing drawing CPU is taskmgr at about 2% and System Idle process at 98% Performance is at 0 and PF usage is at the usual spot I have no idea why its taking so long The hard drive light does not even flash. After about 8 minutes, everything just kicks in like it did during a normal startup. I have scanned for virus, spyware etc... Also defragged the drive What should I do? Oh, is there any system services that might have this kind of effect because I did disable one or two, but I usually enable/disable these services when I change locations. Never had this problem. |

how about u do this go to start/run/msconfig then go to the startup tab and uncheck norton from the list then hit apply and restart, then see if it loads, if so then just manually turn on norton after the startup completes

I just finished going through my msconfig startup again. I disabled a lot of things that I should have disabled a long time ago. Seems like it helped a lot.
Everything seems to load up quickly except my network connection icon. That still took about 3 minutes. What system services are required for a network/internet connection? |

Did you have the same problem before using BootVis? It slowed my startup time down.

BootVis worked fine for me, but I figured I would run BootVis again since I ran it a long time ago.
I have had instances where BootVis seemed to make the start up longer, but usually it works fine for me. |

I still can't figure it out...
There is a checked box in msconfig startup that has no name. Its just a blank space. I dunno what it is: Location: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Should I disable it? |

Yea, might as well. Unless you like running blank lines of code all the time.
So are you saying that after 8 minutes your computer starts working like normal?

After cleaning up the msconfig startup, it doesn't take quite as long.
I'd say about 5 minutes of idle time. The background comes up, the mouse works, and the startmenu works, but I cannot access anything. If I try to access anything, then that particular window comes up with no reaction. Seems like it freezes up, but the mouse still works... When I Ctrl+Alt+Del, I would think that it would say the program is not responding, but it says that it is running. I could end it without a problem right there. So after 5 minutes of no activity, all the HD's start going and all of the startup items come up. Just like it would when the startup time was normal. |

Could there be anything wrong with the Pre-Fetch files?
I'm not too sure how that works. |

delete the prefetch. They will load again as you open apps and will help your pc be a little faster. You should get rid of them about once a month, every time you defrag.

open C:/windows/prefetch, delete all files and restart the computer.

No, but you could keep the ones that are not more than a couple weeks old if you want, that's your choice and I wouldn't delete them to often as I have heard that it could actually slow the system down(like if you did it on a daily basis).

No luck
![]() Still took about 6 mins to do anything... Although, deleting the prefetch solved another problem I was having described in this thread: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=83977 That error message didn't come this time..... What else can I try? |

Do you have Norton's and AVG both starting up and running in the background? If so, that may be your problem.

Oh no, I uninstalled Norton completely.
AVG is running fine. Removing Norton was something I tried to get my startup back to normal. |

Ok...Do you have a netcam or anything extra connected to the computer? I had a client recently that it took forever to completely bootup and it turned out to be his netcam. Unplugged it and everything returned to normal...odd how the little things can make such a difference.

Re: Long system idle time at startup

Also, if you're running XP and if all this started after the Norton's update, you might want to try System Restore to put it back to a day before this started. |

I have the exact same problem. I've had it almost since I installed Win XP. I've gotta used to it now, but it is very annoying. Atchikan, have you had any more luck with yours?

Could it be all the items in the Services list - MSCONFIG - ? My laptop takes a few minutes before all the startup items and services are loaded and I can gain full use of it. This problem started about 3 weeks ago for me, but I don't remember if it was after I installed an XP update or a NAV update.
I have most of the Startup items disabled. |

No help here, just my experience. I had the same problem. Mine started after I installed a ATI TV tuner card and kept changing drivers for it and the video card trying to get it to work. It took about 5 minutes to boot up. After wrestling with it for a couple of months I wound up doing a format, reinstall and going to a AIW card.

It seems the windows services are the problem, not the startup items. When I started the computer without any services the start menu was usable right away, but other things got a bit messed up. I need to know exactly which services should not be loaded.
