I have WINXP and have just put it on my new build here, and I tried to activate it and it said I can't do this. I called the M$ number and they said I had bought it with a new system (when I bought it as an upgrade from online somewhere over a year ago) and said I needed to contact the manufacturer. Basically got nowhere with M$.
I have found that I can download updates though. Well I have heard ways of tricking the OS so that you don't have to do this. Is this easy, and what would I have to do? Also I have 26 days left for my activation on this current install of XP. What will happen when I am not able to activate it? |

If you wait until its over then winxp will lock up and always ask you for an acitvation key. We cannot tell you a way to bypass this since its illegal to discuss that. Just call up M$ again and tell them your problem.

I assume you had this copy of XP installed on another unit. If so, MS should give you a new activation number. I would definitely give them another call and explain the situation.

Assuming this is a legitimate installation and not an attempt at a workaround to get away with installing on more than one system (which such discussions are NOT allowed here).... call Microsoft... run thru the automated activation, it WILL fail, but then direct you to a live person. Explain to the person the reason for having to call for a new ID number and they WILL give you a new one, no hassles. The ONLY time they will hassle you is when they know you have it on one machine and are attempting to install on a second.

Yeah man, I think I got sold an OEM disk, when I was supposed to get an upgrade. Is there anyway to track a SN that was sold to the company I bought this from, from Microsoft???? |

OEM shoudln't matter, I deal with OEM disks every day and have had to go thru re-activation including on my own system. Call Microsoft.

Bushtree is correct, you will get to the logon screen, then if you go to log into your account, before your desktop loads, you get the box to activate, I believe that you can do it via the net, or call, they give you a number to call. Just call the number, and go through the process by phone, it's very easy and quite quick (no navigating through menus, thank goodness), I had to do this when I reinstalled.

Upgrading hardware
I bought WinXP home and installed it on my computer. I changed hard drives, video card, and for a variety of reasons, mostly my screwing around, I reinstalled WinXP a half-dozen times. Then I bought a new motherboard, processor, memory, and a second hard drive. I reinstalled WinXP and activated with no problem. I wasn't happy when Microsoft started the activation business but I have to admit it hasn't been much of a hassle.
