Desktop Icons, XP Pro

Can I get rid of some of my desktop icons and not delete the program? If I right click on the icon and send to"my documents", then delete the desktop icon will I lose it?
I just want to unclutter my desktop.
Thanks
Merry Christmas Everyone

you can just right click on them and delete them,
they are just short cuts and can be replaced any time you want.
all the programs will still be in the start menu

Right click on your desktop, go to properties, Select the desktop tap, select the customize desktop button. From there you can remove icons for internet explorer, My Docs, My Computer and My Network Places.
Merry Christmas.

Sorry I think I worded my original question wrong. What I want to get rid of icns of things I have downloaded to my desktopinstead of C: drive. They aren't on my start/programs list. I would like them to be.
I want to keep the downloads but lose the icon. Thanks for the help.

To remove unused desktop icons

Open Display in Control Panel.
On the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop.
Under Desktop cleanup, click Clean Desktop Now.
Follow the directions in the Desktop Cleanup Wizard.

When you download programs, by default they are stored in Program Files unless you specified a different path. So you can delete the icon. If you need the program, just go to Program Files folder, find the folder for the program, then the core application.

what I do is create a folder called downloads, and anything I download goes to that folder, and I will do with it what I want from there.
I never put anything but short-cuts on my desktop.
