Start/Run and type msconfig, then click the Startup tab and uncheck any programs starting that doesn't need to. If you want to stop some of Windows Services you need to go to Start/Run and type services.msc and stop the ones you don't need. This site will help explain what services you need.

You can type msconfig from the run box. Under the startup tab you will see all of the programs that are starting when you boot. It will also show you the location that the program is called from.

The majority of the programs will probably come from a registry key of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

Some will also be under the Startup folder in your Start Menu.

You have a couple of options. You can disable the program in msconfig by unchecking the box next to it or you can remove the program from the registry key that I talked about. If the program is in the Startup folder, then you can just delete it from there.

Just make sure you're 100% certain about removing anything from the registry.

Here's the MS KB article about the registry. http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;256986

Usually I just uncheck them in Msconfig, but if you are wanting to you can delete them from the registry, just be sure to backup your registry first just in case you delete the wrong thing.
