Change name of 'My Computer' forever
I can rename 'My Computer', 'My Netwrok Neighborhood', and 'Recycle Bin' but when I restart, the names change back. Is there a way I can change it to whatever I want so that everytime I start up it stays the same. There's gotta be something simple I'm missing here.

Are you running XP? Are you making the changes as Adminstrator?

This should help:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_rename_icons.htm Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT. Navigate to the following Registry brach: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID The Desktop Icons are located in the sub keys as follows: My Network Places: {208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D} My Computer: {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} My Documents: {450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103} Recycle Bin:{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} Default IE Icon: {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D} Double click the Default value in the above keys and enter the text you desire. Right click on the Desktop and select Refresh to see the changes. To undo the changes, just right click on the Default value and select Delete. Refresh the Desktop to see that things are back to normal. |

That's odd. I changed mine and they have stayed changed ever since. I have never had them change back. Hmm.

Is the VB utility provided in that site safe to use?

I knew I was going to have to go into the registry. Let me reboot and I'll see how it all works out.

That's so weird. I changed them from the desktop and looked in the reg under the values you gave me to double check, and they were what I changed them to. I rebooted and they stayed the same. Weird why it worked this time and none of the others. But thanks everyone.

THEY'RE BACK!
I knew there was something else to it. Now, after having my system running for about an hour and a half, all the original names are back on the folders! ***... it started out ok, now they are back. What happened? I think one of my programs must be changing it back, but what... I don't know, I'm gonna investigate. |

Same thing keeps happening to me. After a reboot, they were back.
Annoying this. |

Can I ask why you would need to change them? I do it in school just to be anoying and it stays.
