Unhappy Scandisk Hanging at Checking Folders

My dad's comp has been hanging up alot. I tried doing a scandisk right away, and it gets through only two or three blue blocks on the progress bar before restarting. It checks allocation tables, then says checking folders. Hangs and starts over. Does this lead you to believe it's a software prob, or could it be something with the hdd? Thx.

Did it in safe mode after posting, it took from then til now to run thorough scandisk on a 25GB hdd. His comp is an AMD K7 500mhz. That sound right? No errors found, btw. Dunno where to go from here to see what's causing hangs all the time. Reinstall everything?

What are the specs on the PC and attached hardware? Have you run adaware and or spybot search & destroy?

Think it's got 384 RAM. Matrox Dual vid card. Not sure everything else. Done as much housekeeping as I could (adaware, spybot, cleaning extraneous folders, etc.)

Here's another weird thing. Hangs anytime he tried to select a 3D Windows screensaver like 3D FlowerBox or Pipes. Vid card not capable, mebbe?
