Folder w/ Many Setup Files - Slows PC

P4 2.4 Ghz, 1 GB Ram, Windows 2000 Pro

I have a folder where I save almost all of my downloads. There's 130 files in there right now. Almost all are setup/installation files for various programs (freeware, shareware etc..) Whenever I open this folder, it takes a while for the system to "read through" each of these files. You can see it happening b/c when the folder is first opened the icons for all the files are the default application icon. Then as the system reads each, the icon changes.

Does anyone know of a way to speed this up? Once all the files have been read through and cached, the folder opens quickly from then on. At least until the cache is cleared.

I've also got a folder with only a few installation files in, only these files are all at least 160MB in size. They also take quite a while for the system to read.

I have the same problem. Do you have details open on the side panel too. If it has to read details and give previews that may slow it down a bit. The only thing I can think of right now it to organize the files into differ folders. Maybe if there was a way to play witht the cache or something.

Try creating subfolders and organizing the downloads and see if that doesn't help some.

What kind of files are they? Windows installer, self-extracting EXE, or something else? I think that with certain files, like Windows installer files, all of the information is saved in one file, including icons. So when you open the directory in Explorer, every file has to be opened and read to determine the correct icon. I don't think there is much you can do about it; it is a "feature" of Windows Installer.

If they are zip files, explorer might try to open them up and present them to you as folders (on the lift side).

I have created some sub-folders for some of the larger files and it does help a little. As far as the file types go, there's pretty much everything in there. Self-Extracting, Windows Installer, Zip...
I think gonzo is probably correct though, it does appear as if Windows has to "open" the file, read it, grab the icon & other info, and "close" it again.
I was just curious if there was maybe a RegHack or something that someone knew of that could disable this "feature".
Thanks for the help though
