XP question

I know this has been addressed but, I want to repair windows xp. I put the disc in and auto run, I clik install when I got to the place where it asks for my key # I chikened out and canceled. I never saw where it asked if I wanted to repair or whatever. When will that show up?

Something has happened to my system because it won't recognize the serial port so I can use my modem. It used to but now it won't. help please

I think that you should boot from the XP disc. Once you have done that it will load the setup files and then ask whether to do a clean install, repair, etc. Just choose repair and go through the process.

I have the cd as first boot device but windows loads when I boot with the disc in. I tried doing it when it auto runs but it doesn't give me the repair option. I loaded windows on this pc it's a new build but now when it boots with the disc it just loads windows. ???

Do you have another optical drive ? If so, try to boot from that one. Dunno about newer PCs, but at least my PC can just boot from the first optical drive.

You then boot from CD, select install. Windows XP Setup will detect the installed XP and ask you whether you want to repair. Then you select yes and there you go. Win XP Repair will ask you for the serial, that's normal.
