Longhorn download?

Is it true that you can download a beta version of longhorn? If so, does anyone know where? I have seen lots of reviews done on the beta versions and I have an extra HDD that I would like to try it on if I can get it. THX.

I know my friend has a beta copy of Longhorn, I'm not sure you can get it off Microsoft but you can get it off of sites like Bittorrent.

THX, I'll try that. I already tried to look it up on Microsoft without any luck, hence the thread. I'll try that site you mentioned.

Isn't Longhorn's structure completely different than that of older Microsoft OSs? I heard if you put it over XP, it will mess up your computer.

Paul Thurrott's Longhorn FAQ.

This is a post I made earlier this year to another forum member's Longhorn questions...

"Windows Longhorn is in ALPHA form right now...that means it's not a complete or finished operating system...ie: it's buggy as hell and won't run on a system the way WinXP does.

ALPHA testing is just that...the unfinished OS code is supplied to testers who run it on their systems to see how it performs. The tester then provides feedback to Microsoft along with their system specs so that Microsoft gets an idea of what works and what doesn't.

ALPHA testing is not for folks with little computer experience or knowledge.

And you'll have to "pay" to test the Longhorn BETA...it won't be free.

You'll know when Longhorn is about ready to be released in it's finished form when you start reading that it's gone "Gold" in the tech press.

"Longhorn" is the code name for the new OS, it'll be called something else when released."

Longhorn is expected to be released in late 2005.

Like Cricket and tigstah said, it is very buggy and can cause some big time problems if you use it at this stage.

I wouldn't do it unless you have an extra PC laying around that you don't care what happens to it.

All it is right now is eye candy. What is probably the biggest change, the new WinFS file system, isn't even close to being ready. So there isn't much point to looking at it now, unless you want to see what they did to tweak icons from Windows XP.

Ok, well then I won't mess with it. I just had an extra HDD lying here that I thought I might try it on just to play around. I realize that it is nowhere near complete but I didn't know it could screw up a comp. THX guys!

Oh, I don't think it does permanent damage to your components, it just doesn't run stable like mature OS's do.
