reinstall xp
Ok, I give up, can I just reinstall windows? Can I boot from the disc, select setup and go from there. I don't understand how to use the recovery console. My older xp disc just let me select repair and it repaired it, but it looked like it was just installing windows again to me. Can I just install windows over top of the first installation?

Yep, don't select the repair console, select to install then after it finds the installed OS you will have an option to hit R to repair it... It does look as if it is reinstalling everything, but your files and data will still be there.

here's an explanation of the recovery console commands if you need it.

I'm having to do a reinstall also. But when I select install on the same disk as the current install, I get a warning that XP will replace everything in that location, overwriting all my settings. Is that right?

It should give you the option to repair or install, choose repair.
This happens after you choose install. The first repair option (before the install option is offered)is for console. |

Thanks Alfe:
What was throwing me is that I had my system installed on a RAID disk. And I had another disk on a plain IDE port. When XP saw that it didn't give me the repair option. Once I unhooked the IDE drive it gave me the repair choice. Everything went fine. |
