customizing xp

i kno this isnt recommended or anything but i want to customize the boot screen and possibly the logon screen and GUI
i found a guide on how to do this here
it pretty much explains everything but i want to kno how i can fix things IF i mess up and xp wont even boot

Get a disk imaging program: Norton Ghost; Drive Image; or Acronis True Image. Hunt around. You can find one of these programs for probably around $15-30. They're worth every penny.

You make an image of your C:\ BEFORE you touch anything. If you foul up, you just execute the image.

You'll be surprised how handy any of the above programs are. Most problems are corrupted software. Just restore!

useing the restore is the best and easist way to fix a problem with xp, every time you make a system change or add software it will create a new restore point.
and if what you do messes something up, you just go back to a restore point when it was working good.
very simple and quick.

also, it is one of the best features of xp, why so many want to disable this feature I will never understand.

ok i have restore up but if something goes wrong how do i restore it to the working configuration? is it automatic or something?

you just pick the date that you want to restore too

gah i tried it and i messed up of course and restore wouldnt help me so i had to reinstall windows
im never tryin this again
(gah my curiosity will make me)
