controlling file sharing

I have 2 XP computers on a network,1 is mine, the other belongs to someone that thinks AV programs are useless and that P2P programs are safe becaus everyone uses them...So I wanted to know if I can control the files comming in with windows, with a prompt or something, so that no pesky bugs comme through.

What do you mean control them? If you want the file, click save, if you don't want the file, click cancel. That's all the control you need.

Wink

i think i see your point ghost2003.
you might consider using a outside vendor firewall on your pc [i hear the pro oe equipped one is not quite as secure] to block any access to your pc from another networked pc's programs.

p.s. please tell me that your friends pc is not going thru your pc to access the internet. if so, you may want to get a router for a internet connection splitter to help seperate the pc's.

Oh you mean a firewall? You can use the free ZonelAlarm and set it to ask you for permission of everything that comes in and goes out.

No, I mean without a fire wall, becaus now files can go from one computer to the other without restrictions. I have a router to connect both PC's. Or maybe a way to just block .exe files. I dont want a firewall becaus i have a router and a firewall will just annoy me since im already protected. I still want file sharing, I just want more control.

if you have av software on your computer then every thing that comes on to you computer is checked so it should be safe
as long as you keepthe av upto date if you friend has a wish to see his computer messed up by some virus or a trojan then i wood only give him access to the shaird folder and not your hole computer

Firewall works for your LAN as well as your WAN (Internet). You will be better protected b/c you'll see what on your computer is trying to connect with the outside world. You could then stop it. But as far as what you mean only share certain folders and then put permissions/restrictions on them to further promote security.
BTW, I have a router and a firewall and find it necessary to have both.

Ive been told my router is all I need by other members of this forum.
I guess my AV will do for that file sharing thing.
