can't start XP after install?

I have a hewlitt packard pavilion pc which came with windows ME but I had upgraded to XP...now I reformatted my harddrive and did a fresh install of XP...everything is fine except after windows gets installed and reboots itself...it doesn't start...it gets to the Windows XP loading screen...and then after that it's just a black screen but the computer is still on...now I have no idea what to do and I can't get on windows even though it should be installed already...any help would be greatly appreciated and Happy New Year! Thanks.

I think you may need to install the drivers for the motherboard on that system, as xp does not have them

Redo it,are you using the XP cd to format the drive?
That would be the way to go.
