Folder PW protect
I have XP Pro, no network.
Here is the deal: I only have one user, and do not want to create more; however, my sister uses my computer to check her email and so on. How do I protect a/some folder(s) with a password, so she can't open it and make changes to it? Thanks! |

xp-pro and if it has the ntfs format , you can password protect folders and files, that is one of the reasons to use the ntfs format.

Go to http://www.kinocode.com/maxcrypt.htm and download Maxcrypt (Free) and just encrypt the folders, then no one but you can even access them.

I tried Lil Jimmie's way, but I dont ahve the "compressed (zipped) folder feature"
rick click -> new -> and no compressed folder option.... any idea why? I found this after the above post... Note Installing a different compression program to Windows will remove Compressed (zipped) Folders from the right-click menu choices and replace it with the new compression program's icon I have winzip installed...could it be why? Can I use that to PW the folder/files? Last edited by MultiGroup; 01-02-2004 at 03:24 AM. |

Why not just do it the way I suggested using Maxcrypt. Not only is the file or folder now password protected, but it is also encrypted and invisible to anyone not signed on. If you have personel or financial information, including Tax stuff, on your computer this is the only way to go.

I was reading over it, and there seems to be a few bugs with that application. I am assuming that you are currently using it? how is it working for you? andyms18a: I tried using the info from the link that lil Jimmie gave me, but using winzip instead...it did work. The only thing is that the zipped folder was PW protected, but when I open windows explorer and open the original folder...well, it opened w/o prompting for a PW. Thanks for all your help to this point. |
