Using fdisk you'll probably have to delete all existing partitions first, reboot with floppy, then run fdisk and just create 2 partitions, reboot again, then format the partitions...

Windows gives you the option to create partitions when you install it.

Fdisk, and lose the info you have, or Partition Magic. There are some free partition programs ones but I've never tried them.

Wink

if you do choose to start from scratch and reload everything you have, then fdisk is the way to go.

other programs can change the boot sector to make the changes, but the boot sector may remain altered and some other programs may not work right. [possibly progs like goback, secondchance etc.] i've used partitionmagic but...

i try to keep the boot sector stock config when making partitions using fdisk. [don't invite problems]

if you have a new drive [no partition ever made.] then you boot to dos with fdisk on a floppy and choose large disc support.

it automatically picks 1 as the first choice to make a partition and you go along with it and pick your size or it will default to the max.

set the primary partition as active [so you can boot from it]
and finalize the creation of the primary active drive.

next select to create a extended partition [where you can make as many extra partitions as you like [up to the end of the alphabet]inside the extended partition you create using up the rest of the hdd space.

each extra partition you want to make are called logical.

so i'm clear on this....

fisk makes the first partition called primary and for the size you choose and sets it active so windows will be able to boot from within it.

any additional partitions you want must be created within the remaining space left that must be labeled extended.

you may make several extra logical drive partitions within this extended partition space remaining.

IF you already have any partitons on the hdd, then you MUST delete ALL partitions [one at a time and the primary last]

heres the last stab.... common fdisk doesn't report the drive size correctly above 60 gig. not a problem if you make the drive one whole partition.

BIG problem if you try to make extra extended logical partitions. [search microsoft.com for fdisk problems and you will find a download for the latest version of fdisk for your op.system which works right, you WILL need it.]

it's not that hard once you understand how the pc looks at the drive as a whole.

don't forget to run format on each partition after you're done if you ever want windows to use them.
