Unable to boot

A friend is currently having problems when booting his computer (XP PRO), when he attempts to access the recovery console to try and fix the installation of windows, a password is requested.

No password is set so enter is pressed, then a list of commands is displayed.

How would he go about getting his computer operational again without reformatting? (Safe mode works the same).

Thanks in advance

When your friend gets to the recovery console just hit enter when it promps for a password. No password is required unless he set one up.

To rephrase what andyms18a said...
Start the computer, booting to the XP CD.
Select new install, hit F8 to agree to the TOS, and on the next screen, you will be prompted to hit "R" to repair a current installation.
