Question pc restarts instead of shutdown

Hi
I just reformatted my sister's pc, it works great except that she says it often reboots when she does start/shutdown instead of shutting down. It never did it to me once, but she says it's happened a couple times.
I have never had that happen before on any pc I have done, and since I haven't seen it, I don't know what it is. I know sometimes there is a setting for the button for shut down or sleep, but it is set for shut down, I checked. And anyway she says she is picking shutdown. Any ideas?
TIA

Is Easy CD Creator installed?

. . . and if you're still having trouble (since shutdown can be a tricky issue), http://www.aumha.org has a good Troubleshooter for shutdown problems at their website.
Best of luck

Hi Gary, good vacation? Sounds like your fuel combo will keep you energized with the cookies, but don't wander too far from the outhouse when the bran kicks in!

It is winME, athlonXP 1000, 512mb ram, 40gb HD, voodoo5, ac97 OB sound. And it was mostly my stuff running great (except I had XP) till the day I put it in her pc when I upgraded mine that same day I reformatted her drive . It runs perfect, until you try to shut down. And actually when I put the parts in and reformatted and installed all the SW, it shut down fine for me here, I never had the problem. It started having the problem after she got it home (of course).
It goes all the way out, even the light on the monitor goes amber, then it magically turns itself back on and restarts. And it does it every time now. I have repaired and built many pcs, but never had this exact problem. I am support tech at a school now, so you don't get to mess much with all the new cool stuff. And I stopped doing much side work because I got so sick of owning forever any pc you fixed for someone even if you did it free and gave them stuff...you never hear the end of it, but I am somewhat out of the loop now, don't know how some of the newer stuff works...
Most of the tech docs are for the problems with NOT shutting down, especially in win98. I did see one for XP about disabling "restart on fatal error" that might help, but I have to go see if there is even a similar thing in ME to try - I don't have an ME machine here to look at right now.
I am thinking it may be a setting in the bios because I noticed that the bios had reset to default when she took it home and set it up. Maybe there is a power save feature I don't know about? Any ideas? I did see "power button-sleep/instant off", it is set to instant off, but I didn't recognize any other one...
thanks for responding..

Hi again all -

tuffluck - yes, there is that same "restart on error" setting in WinMe that's in XP (the two interfaces are similiar). It's in the Properties for System, if I'm remembering Ok tonight.

She wouldn't have any "wake on Lan", "wake on Modem", or "wake on PCI" settings going on? [is she on a home network?]

Perhaps she isn't "shutting down", but is actually going to a sleep or suspend mode, and then activity is waking the pc. Or she accidentally has selected the restart option from the list and not noticed. [especially if she's only an occasional computer user]

If it isn't something mundane like a shutdown setting that's off, you could help her check the Bios settings to reset them to values you know are correct.

I'm hoping for a simple cure
. . . Gary
