XP using conexant R6795-11 modem by Aceex
Here's the delima,
I just upgraded to XP pro and seems to have problems establishing a solid internet connection. Under win2k I always connected the first time and always at a good speed. Now I have to sometimes make four or five attempts before I succesfully log on and then it like at 28.8k. I have tried updating the modem drivers but they don't seem to work. I have an Aceex 56V14HCF w/conexant R6795-11 RH56D/SP-PCI but only the inbiuld drivers XP provides seem to work. I tried using the updated generic drivers from conexant for HCF modems which is the same one on Rebbots site, but I get this error "Cannot find a dialtone." I then just rollback the inbuild driver and I get a dialtone and connect but not always the first time. Can someone give me some suggestions. I just can't sit here and have to wait for like ten minutes just to connect to the net. I also tried some drivers that came with the modem but it seems to not recognize the modem properly and it just won't dial out at all. Thanks Eddie

I have tried updating drivers, init strings and what not, but I just can't seem to get a consistant connection with this Conexant chipset and XP. It looks like I will just have to accept it or spring $38 for a USR2977!

Of all the PCI modems I have used in build, I have always had very good luck with that one. ANd with XP they work really great using XP's built in generic driver.
What you can try is to first uninstall the modem in the Device manager and uninstall the drivers, shutdown, remove the modem physically, restart the machine, shutdown again, reinstall the modem into a different PCI slot, restart the machine and let Windows install the generic drivers as if it was a new installation. See if that works. However, if you can afford it the USR2977, being a hardware modem will give you the best that the physical condition your phone lines can support and it will connect quicker with less drops. |

Morriswindgate,
I purchased this modem about a year ago orignally using win2k and was rock solid always connecting the first time and an average speed of 42000. This is why I am so pissed off because I really had a lot of confidence in this modem and now with XP its a POS. Most poeple who used the internet on my machine under win2k would comment on how fast it was compared to there machines. I have tried everything you mention with the exception of physically taking the modem out. Windows has no problem detecting the modem or installing the generic driver its just that my connection speed sucks and it takes two or three attempts to log on. The thing is when I most need to get online quick it seems that's the time it took like 8 attempts before I connected. When I just log on because I am bored it connects the first time and at a decent speed. the poeple at PC Club where I bought this had this advertised as a hardware modem and I thought that all along until XP messed that up and now I find out its a windmodem with a DSP which makes poeple beleive it a hardware one. Anyways sorry its so long, this is one thing I did not expect to have problems when I upgraded to XP. Thanks Edrod13 |

Well I decided to use the Best Data driver and my connection problems have improved. I for the most part connect on the first attempt and my average connect speeds are about 42k. I think I read here or on some other site that you could use the Best Data driver if you had an HCF modem.
