i am about to fit a new 80gb hard drive in place of my old 20 gig.
the idea is to install xp home oem on the new HD and discard the 20 gb with win98se on it. i have made a boot disk from win98 . will this work to get xp up and running on the new drive ? or what is the best course of action in my situation please? i have nothing much i want to keep on the 20 gb HD and most of that is saved to CD's. thanks jp |

lostplanet,
Set pc to boot from the cd-rom in the BIOS. Insert XP cd in drive and follow instructions. Very easy! Carl |

which leads me to this
how does this work?(i have no idea how/if this works) i put xp on the 80gb drive and use the 20 gb as a secondary storage drive, is the data on the 20 gb (win98se) able to switch drives, as if i wanted to transfer a program or files from the 20 to the 80 with xp home on it and vice versa. i'm probly cofusing you and myself here! what i mean is can i run win98(but not boot) on one drive but as a storage drive and have xp on the primary drive but still have them communicate/transfer data, if xp is on the drive that boots from startup? pick the bones outta that thanks jp |

There is a way to do a dual boot system (though you'll have to search the forums for directions on how) which lets you choose which OS you want to boot from on startup. OR, you can just delete 98se from the 20gb and use it as storage space. You should be able to copy all necessary data from the 20 to the 80 no problem.

Two ways to appraoch this.
One is to install the new drive as Master (actually use cable select on drive and position drive at end of cable on IDE1) and load XP by setting boot device to be CD-ROM. Then install the old drive. It can be slave (actually cable select and position on cable determines Master/Slave) on IDE1 or Master or Slave on IDE2. XP will see it and you can retrieve files and data from it and write to it. Any programs on the drive will have to be reloaded using XP so that XP knows about them. You cain't execute programs on the old drive using XP as there are no registry entries in XP to identify them, so therefore the reason that all programs have to be reloaded. Other way is a dual boot. Install both the new drive (Master) and old drive (Slave) at same time using cable select with position on cable determining Master/Slave relationship. Boot up with CD as first boot device. XP will see the WIN98 install and set up a boot loader. Personally I would not mess with a dual boot. I tried it and it was just a waste of space since I never used WIN98 after I started using XP So what I would do is load XP on the new drive, install the old one, retrieve any data or files I wanted, then use XP to format it for storage. Yes. After you get it up and running, install your 20G drive. Copy anything that you might want over to your 80G.
Then, Start > right click My Computer > select Manage > click Disk management > go to drive and select Format. Chas |
