I maybe wrong here, but isn't NETBUI used for file and printsharing on a local network only and isn't used for ICS.

NetBeui will work for the 3 PC's to share but is a nonroutable protocol which means
it is not the protocol that will enable U 2 share the internet connection between the 3 PCs. Use nebeui for the lan and ICS to share the internet connection..

OK, well the netbeui is not the reason the internet connection will not share between the PC's.. Dial-up is bad enough on 1 PC, but it can really be bad when you try to use it over a lan and share it between PC's. It's not really designed for that, but it should and does work, so without more info as to your exact problem or what exactly is not working I would try the windows troubleshooter if I were U...

The cable router is your problem ,get a hub or better yet a switch ,just set ICS up on the one computer that will connect to the internet and network it to the others.I've got 8 computers set up just this way with dial-up. (no hope of broadband here for a very long time). We only run 4 at one time and have to take turns with downloads as they kill everyone else's connection speed.

You should be fine to use the switched hub portion of your router to simply network the 3 PCs. If it has those 4 ports in addition to the wan port then those 4 ports are the switched hub portion of your router. You can still let the router assign IP addresses or disable DHCP in the routers config and assign the PCs a static IP address. That would be a matter of personal preference..Make sure the PC's all have the same workgroup name and use the ICS wizard to set up the internet connection sharing.. Just curious though why are use using a broadband router?? As long as you aren't plugging into the WAN port then it should work. The only thing the WAN port is designed for is to connect out to a cable or DSL modem..

ok, so the router i have should work? well i can't get it to.
i'm using a broadband router because, well i have no understanding of networks at all! i've never seen a dial-up router before. and my dad is the one who bought it, i told him it should work, but i have no idea what i'm doing when it comes to networking.i have the the WAN port open and 2 of the other prots hooked to computers. i don't have the third on the network quite yet. this networking thing is making me so mad its not funny! i'm about ready to give up on it!! |

OK, just take a deep breath take 1 step at a time and we'll get you there. If U have link lights on both NIC cards and both of the ports that are being used then U are done with the physical part of setting up this network. Than use the networking wizard on the PC with XP and it wi;ll pretty much walk U thru everything else U need to do...

lol ok, thats for getting me back on track lol
i got the lights on the NIC to light up and all, went through the wizard and i can transfer files between the computers. i could even play games, but now i can't for some reason. i was trying to get the internet part of it to work and now the link to play games is gone in the games its self, i think it was called IPX, or XPI, something like that, any way its gone now. i also can't get the client computers to get online from the 'server' computer. i have the 'server' turned on and on the net, but it still wont work. i tried a bunch of how-tos online, did windows troubleshooter, and did the wizard. but still.......... nothing! ![]()
